Another big step on the road to a national germplasm collection
Dr Mark Thomas’s first job as a Postdoctoral Fellow with the CSIRO was to develop an objective way to identify grapevines using DNA markers known as microsatellites or SSRs. It quickly became the accepted method globally.
Twenty-five years on, he has developed an even better system and is about to use it to take perhaps the biggest step yet towards equipping Australia to create a national winegrape germplasm collection.

Bursary assists travel to Bordeaux for ‘non-conventional’ reasons
Hundreds of different yeast strains are used in wine fermentation but we’ve really only scratched the surface in terms of understanding the possible options. Interest is growing because of the potential for new yeasts both to differentiate product on the wine market and to result in different wine attributes.
Wine Australia awarded a travel bursary to University of Adelaide researcher and PhD student Ana Hranilović to help her learn more about the species Lachancea thermotolerans.

Wine Australia travel and visiting scholar bursaries close 7 October
Applications for Wine Australia’s travel and visiting scholar bursaries will close on Friday 7 October 2016.
Each year, Wine Australia invests in travel and visiting scholar bursaries with applications open to the Australian grape and wine community twice a year. Applications are currently open for travel set to commence between 1 January and 30 June 2017.
Travel bursaries are on offer to the Australian grape and wine sector to fund travel, study tours or conferences they wish to attend to develop their knowledge and skills, and network with the international research community.
Funding is also available to bring international experts to Australia to participate in workshops, meetings, conferences, symposia or research projects, and share their knowledge with the grape and wine community.

Australian eChallenge Agri-Food & Wine - win $10,000
Applications are open for the inaugural Australian eChallenge AgriFood & Wine program and there’s $10,000 to be won.
Supported by the University of Adelaide and PIRSA, the Australian eChallenge AgriFood & Wine program cultivates innovative and entrepreneurial thinking by encouraging participants to turn their ideas into reality through workshops and tailored mentoring sessions from industry professionals.
Tangible outcomes of the program may include the development of new ventures, products, services and / or processes that create innovative ways to engage with existing, emerging and new markets.
The Australian eChallenge AgriFood & Wine is free and is open to everyone, including secondary or tertiary students and members of the grape and wine community. All that is required is a previously unfunded business idea and a desire to see it become real. Your innovative idea could be a new app or software, a new product or service, or a new process.

16th Australian Wine Industry Technical Conference and Trade Exhibition (AWITC)
The AWITC will be held in Adelaide in July 2016 and features a program that includes esteemed local and international speakers, workshops, an expansive trade exhibition and networking events.
