Fellowship of The Called Camp

On July 5, SWU kicked off a 10-day intensive summer experience designed to help high school students explore how their gifts, abilities, personalities and passions line up with God’s calling on their lives. Rising high school freshmen through recent high school graduates are participating in the camp. Please keep them in your prayers as the camp enters its second week!
SWU’s Division of Religion is partnering with the Music Department of the Division of Fine Arts to create a program to prepare students for leadership not only in the musical portion of a worship service but also in the fuller definition of worship through the ministry of the Word, the sacraments, and other areas. Adam Ladd positions a supporting beam into place on the stage of a new amphitheater being constructed on the Central campus. Assisting Ladd are SWU Physical Plant employees Mark Taylor, bottom left; and Harold Miller, bottom right. Ladd is the university’s safety coordinator/event specialist.
This outdoor venue, located along Wesleyan Drive between Newton Hobson Chapel and Fine Arts Center and Nicholson-Mitchell Christian Ministry Center, will host concerts, plays and other outdoor events.

Personnel Announcements
 
Liz (Keown) Coleman has been hired as admissions counselor for SWU’s traditional program and begins employment today. Coleman graduated from SWU in May this year with a BS in psychology. She was involved in student leadership as a PASS intern (Promoting Athlete Student Success), as an intramurals coordinator with the athletic department and as a reference assistant for library services. She has also worked as a cashier and sales associate with Ace Hardware in Honea Path, her hometown. Liz recently married Josh Coleman of Pendleton June 18. Josh will graduate from SWU in May '17.
 
Jason Brown begins employment today as groundskeeper. Brown has grown up in the local community and is a graduate of Daniel high school. Along with groundskeeping experience, he has worked as assistant market manager at Ingles Market in Easley.
 
Travis Cartee began employment on July 6 as site assistant at SWU’s Charleston regional learning center. Cartee earned his BA in philosophy from Clemson University and has a variety of work experiences in the Charleston area including a glass company, a law firm and a yacht service company. He is also a freelance videographer/photographer and musician/singer/songwriter, using these skills in ministry at his home church in Goose Creek.
 
Zoe Gowen has been hired as distance learning librarian effective Aug. 15. Gowen completed her BA in English from Grove City College (PA) and her MLS from San Jose State University. She is currently an intern with the FAA in Washington DC and has teaching experience at a Christian academy, in additional to professional experience in library services in public and higher ed library settings.

Blueberries are in!

The Schmutzes have an abundance of blueberries, especially right now in the rows of young bushes. Come pick your own blueberries at New Life Farm, 725 Clayton (close to SWU and next to Potters Place), The cost this year is $9 per gallon, and a portion goes to the SWU scholarship fund.
Bring your own bucket or container, or borrow theirs to return later. They use an honor system, so cash or checks can be left in the money box at the bucket tree.  
Mikkaela Bailey, a history major from Greenwood, is in Great Britain researching the influence of the Magna Carta on the English national identity from the 13th Century through the 18th Century. She’s pictured at Runnymede, where the Magna Carta was signed. Her research is being funded by a grant through SCICU. Read more>>

Congratulations!

MicroSurgical Technology has announced the appointment of Jeff Castillo (’87) to the position of president. Castillo began his career at Procter & Gamble, then spent 21 years in a variety of roles and positions at Johnson & Johnson, including international business director Latin America.

Castillo earned his BA in business administration from SWU and also has an MBA from the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business.
Rhett Keaton (’16), a BSBA graduate, is now an inside sales representative for Ulbrich Stainless Steels and Metals, Inc., a global precision re-roller and distributor of stainless steel strip, special metals strip, foil, shaped wire, fine wire, sheet, plate, bar and PV ribbon products. Keaton will also be returning to SWU as an online MSML student.
Jonathan Lewis (’87) is assuming the position of District Superintendent of the North Carolina East District of The Wesleyan Church at the district conference in High Point this month.  
Gentry Olivia McKenzie was born July 7 to Ian ('09) and Morgan Harper McKenzie ('07) at 7 lbs. 13 oz. and 21 inches. Proud grandpa is Dr. Roger McKenzie, professor of religion.
