1 July 2016.

Dear <<First Name>>,

Hello and welcome, especially if you're new and I met you at the MCA Zine Fair and Supanova Sydney recently!

Here's what has been happening:

Supanova Sydney

Supanova Sydney 2016 Comic Supa-Star guests

As I mentioned in my last newsletter, I had the immense privilege and honour of being the Banksia Project recipient for Sydney, receiving tutelate from the amazing Alisha Jade (Platinum Ledger winner and all-around legend who gives so much to the Australian comics community. That's her in the teal next to me). It was my first time tabling in the same area as the rest of the Comic Supa-Star guests, and I had an absolute blast: the staff and volunteers looked after me really well (those volunteers are just amazing!), I had access to the Green Room (and ran into John Noble on the stairs), and I was even invited to Saturday's after party (where Juliet Landau randomly struck up a conversation with me and I got to chat to Tom Taylor for a significant stretch of time about process and writing comics). I would like to thank Supanova for having me and thank Alisha for being so generous with her experience, wisdom and time!

New online store!

Supanova also coincided with the complete overhaul of my website and online store, which only came about thanks to my very talented and resourceful husband Ben Beilharz, who dragged it kicking and screaming into 2016. Not only is my website now pretty and functional, it operates really well with plenty of room for expansion! Go take a look!

Monsters now available!

Monsters: Anthology and colouring book covers

Now that my website and online store have been completely overhauled, I am pleased to announce that Monsters—the anthology (in print and digital), the colouring book and the “Here be dragons” poster (illustrated by the marvellous Kathleen Jennings) are available for purchase. There is even an anthology/colouring book bundle for the little monster in your life!

ComiXology users: please note that Monsters has been accepted by the Submit program, but has not appeared on the platform yet. I will let you know when it does.

Eternal Life (Part 4)

However, that's not all: Eternal Life (Part 4) by me and Paul Wong-Pan is also now available for purchase in print and digital. Here's a bit more about it:

It's the following morning and the comm ports have come back online. Bri is able to make that all-important phone call to sort out what's happened with her assets, but she's in for an unpleasant surprise. Furthermore, her offer to help Dan out, while gratefully accepted by Dan, is not met with the same reception from his family. But then something happens that no one expected …

(ComiXology users, please note: Part 4 has also been accepted by the Submit program, but has also not appeared on the platform yet. I will keep you posted!)

For those of you not familiar with Eternal Life, it's an ongoing original science fiction graphic novel that I like to describe as Lost in Translation in space—strangers meeting by chance, forging a connection and going on to influence each other's lives. It's about people, relationships and time. Oh, and the nature of space travel. If you'd like to get up to speed, I have all four chapters in a very nice bundle.

Free comic: Eternal Life (Part 1)

As I mentioned in my previous newsletter, to celebrate the release of Eternal Life (Part 4), I am giving away Part 1 for free. However, now that my website has been overhauled, the link from my last newsletter no longer works. Instead, to download your copy, do the following:

  1. Go to http://hivemindedness.com/product/eternal-life-part-1/.
  2. Click “Add to cart”.
  3. Go to the Checkout page and enter the coupon code “john17v3”.
  4. You should then be able to complete the transaction and obtain a link to download the DRM-free PDF!

Contact me if you have any trouble.

Paul and I hope you enjoy our story.

Comic Con-versation 2016

I also mentioned in my last newsletter that I would be participating in this year's Comic Con-versation—a week-long festival of all things comics involving various libraries across Sydney.

Comix Creatrix exhibition

To kick things off, Liverpool Library are launching the Comix Creatrix exhibition of Australian women creators next Monday 4 July at 6pm. There will be drinks and nibblies, plus a panel discussion with some of the creators (including Queenie Chan, Lesley Vamos, Regine Clarke, Alex Hammond and, of course, me!) It promises to be a really interesting evening, so please come along! View full details for the event on Facebook.

If you live out near Liverpool way, take a look at the full Liverpool Library program as they have some great comics-related events in store!

Music and comics

In addition, I will be chairing a panel on music and comics at Ashfield Library on Sunday 10 July at 2:30pm in the Civic Centre below the library. The rest of the panel consists of comics enthusiast Alan Chu, comic creators and musicians Sam McEwen and Ben Quinlan, and geek pop singer songwriter and comic creator Meri Amber. We've been having some really interesting discussions in the process of putting the panel together, and I am looking forward to sharing some of it with everyone. If you love music and comics, this is the event for you!

Artists Alley at Ashfield Library

I will also be tabling in Artists Alley at Ashfield Library on Sunday 10 July as part of the Comics Lounge. The Alley will be open 12-5pm and a terrific bunch of creators will be there selling their work. It's a fabulous opportunity to check out some local talent!

Festival program

I strongly encourage you to check out the rest of the Comic Con-versation program as events may be occuring at a library near you! This year, the list of libraries includes not only Ashfield, Liverpool and Sutherland, but also Auburn, Camden, Manly and Randwick.
