Hello Colleague, here is Nova's July 2016 e-bulletin!

In this bulletin you'll find details of a wide range of news, events, funding and training for the voluntary sector in and around the Wakefield District. We regularly update the website so please do check on a frequent basis in order to keep up to date. 

Remember: if you are a Nova member you can send in your own events, training, news and jobs through the members area on the website. 
 

Nova News

Nova Announces Partnership with Ladbrook Insurance

We are pleased to announce Ladbrook Insurance, a Yorkshire insurance broker specialising in supporting third sector organisations, is a new Nova Partner. The partnership will provide risk management support throughout the year for Nova members. The object of the partnership is to inform and support members regarding the unique risks faced by third sector organisations. Ladbrook will be providing tailored training sessions (Introduction to Risk Management session planned for 10 August) for Nova members and providing papers on emerging and important issues in the risk and insurance world. The first paper is on the Insurance Act (pdf). 
Tim Larden, Managing Director of Ladbrook said, “We are delighted to work closely with Nova and support their members in matters of risk and insurance. We have had a relationship with Nova since 2003 and are delighted to be able to support the membership more by providing advice on risk and insurance issues.”

Nova's Blog

There are two new blog posts on our website at the moment! Jan Firth - Nova Adviser Health and Social Care, has written the micro-commissioning blog post about how Nova was allocated £48,000 by West Wakefield MCP to fund small scale voluntary sector projects, which have a positive effect on the health and well-being of West Wakefield residents.
Also, from 4 - 8 July, Year 10 student Michael Schurbaum from Horbury Academy joined Nova for a weeks work placement. Michael has written the my week at Nova! blog post for us.

News

Side by Side

Side by Side is a new Alzheimer's Society service which helps people with dementia to keep doing the things they love and get out and about with the support of a volunteer. The Side by Side service in Wakefield is seeking volunteers. If you would like to find out more about volunteering for Side by Side, or to register your interest in becoming a volunteer, please visit the Alzheimer's Society website


Minister for Civil Society announces plans for Local Charities Day

Rob Wilson, the Minister for Civil Society, has announced that he has kept his job and the Office for Civil Society is moving to sit in the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. Plans for a Local Charities Day, which would take place later this year to celebrate local charities and community groups, are also being made, but a date has not yet been set. WDH Love Where You Live

The Wakefield District Housing (WDH) Love Where You Live Awards are back for 2016. Nominations for the awards are now open! Nominate people and groups from your local community for the following awards: Young Achiever, Best Neighbourhood, Working with Older People, Working with Younger People, Community Group, and Best Garden. WDH also have two new award categories for 2016:
  • Community Champion of the Year, for an individual who has gone the extra mile and shows exceptional commitment to their community.
  • Arts and Culture Award, for an individual or group who have made a contribution to arts and cultural activities with their community.
All short-listed contestants will take away some prize money at the grand final! Make your nominations here!
 

Community Catalyst Free Marketing Guide

Community Catalyst has launched a free marketing guide (pdf). The guide is aimed at people running small community enterprises and ventures that offer health, care and wellbeing services and supports to other people. The 50 page booklet is available free of charge and contains information about things like setting up a website, using social media, how to link with public sector commissioners, getting your message right, the power of word of mouth recommendations and jargon busting.


National Village and Community Halls Network

The Village and Community Halls Network provides an opportunity for members to air their views and consolidate them in the development of policies in support of village halls and similar rural community buildings. Members consist of volunteers managing these buildings, County-based village hall associations, representatives of organisations with an interest in village halls such as NALC, and others who appreciate the role of village hall and community halls in the provision of facilities for the delivery of services across rural England. For more information, and to join the network, please visit the website.


Beat the heat!

Public Health England has published a new guide Beat the heat: staying safe in hot weather (pdf) which explains how to stay safe in hot weather. The document tells you who is at greatest risk of ill health from the heat, how to recognise when you or someone’s health may be affected, and what to do if you or someone else becomes unwell as a result of the heat.


Easy video guide on how to set up user-led organisations

Spectrum Centre for Independent Living, Southampton, has produced a very accessible video guide on how to set up user-led organisations or a community group. Topics covered include, working out your direction, planning, funding and finance, and how to get advice and support. Nova Learning and Networking - Introduction to Risk Management

Risk is a factor that all third sector organisations, large and small, should consider. All organisations are subject to the risk of failure in many guises, technological, supplier, natural or man-made disasters, funding and many other causes. Risk management concerns identifying risks, preventing their occurrence, minimising their impact or helping an organisation recover quickly should they occur. Planning to be resilient in a turbulent third sector is vital. Tim Larden, Ladbrook Insurance will be delivering the session.

Funding Opportunities
There are lots of funding opportunities on the Nova website at the moment. Please see below for a selection of the funding opportunities currently available:

Comic Relief - Core Strength Grants
Application deadline: 27 July 2016
Grants up to £40,000 over two years to fund the core costs of small local organisations in the UK delivering work around women and girls, young people, health, and stronger communities.

Cultural Protection Fund 2016 - 2020
Application deadline: 31 August 2016
The funding is aimed at supporting not-for-profit organisations that are working with a partner organisation to protect cultural heritage in countries in the Middle East and North Africa region. The deadline for Expressions of Interests is 1 August 2016. The deadline for full applications is 31 August 2016.

Coalfields Community Investment Programme - Health Theme
Application deadline: 16 September 2016
Coalfields Community Investment Programme offer is now live for the Health Theme. The Health Theme will be supporting projects that increase participation in activities/services that improve the health and wellbeing of people in former coalfield communities. This may include sports projects focusing on the stated underrepresented groups (Impairment Groups/Disabled People, Women and girls, Victims of abuse, Carers, Homeless people), healthy eating initiatives, mental health support and projects focusing on promoting social interaction and engagement.

2017 GSK IMPACT Awards
Application deadline: 21 September 2016
Applications are now open for the 2017 GSK IMPACT Awards, which provide funding and free training for charities that are working to improve people’s health. The GSK IMPACT Awards are judged by a prestigious panel of judges and provide national recognition for the winning charities. They also give organisations access to a free leadership programme, designed specifically for health charities, provided by The King’s Fund. 

Dementia Innovation Healthy and Active Life Fund
Developed by NHS Wakefield Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG ), and Public Health at Wakefield Council, the joint fund is to support creative and innovative ideas to help Wakefield communities become more dementia friendly - with the aim of providing small one-off grants for voluntary and community groups, businesses, organisations, schools/services. The funding panel will be meeting on the following dates:
  • Thursday 4 August 2016
  • Thursday 29 September 2016
  • Thursday 8 December 2016
Please ensure your application is received one week before to be considered for funding.

One Stop Carriers for Causes Grants Programme
Application deadline: This is a rolling programme, applications can be made throughout the year.
Grants of up to £1,000 are available for projects that benefit local communities within two miles of a One Stop store in Great Britain. The One Stop’s ‘Carriers for Causes’ grants programme is funded through the money raised from the 5p bag charge in One Stop stores in England, Wales and Scotland. The funding is administered by Groundwork on behalf of One Stop. Types of projects funded will be broad and will cover the direct costs needed to deliver the project. 

Big Lottery Celebrate Programme
Application deadline: Applications will be assessed on a first come, first served basis until all funds are awarded.
The Big Lottery Fund is calling on local groups and organisations in Wakefield to apply for funding to hold events or activities that will bring people together and celebrate what makes their local community special. A new £3.8 million grant programme called Celebrate is now open for groups and organisations of all shapes and sizes across England to apply for funding, between £300 and £10,000, to celebrate their local community in Her Majesty The Queen’s 90th birthday year.

Auto Enrolment and Other Contract Necessities

Auto enrolment is being phased in. With more and more small employers approaching their due date, PERS offers this timely half day course for employers in the third sector. This is a practical course to explore what you must do to become ready for this legislation. You will see that auto enrolment should not be left until the last minute. PERS will also help you understand whether your mandatory written statement of employment terms and conditions are compliant – and what to do if not. The cost for a VCS organisation is £50.00.

Volunteer Managers' Forum - Volunteers and Benefits

Dave Forrest from the Bradford Volunteer Centre will be delivering the session which will discuss changes in benefits, community work placements, and recent changes affecting asylum seekers and refugees volunteering.
