Vandals cause "hundreds of pounds" damage to John Holness Garden

The John Holness Garden in Love Lane has been badly vandalised.

The bench has been damaged beyond repair and will cost hundreds of pounds to replace.

The garden was set up to commemorate Mr Holness who died in 2002 and was well known in Ongar due to his involvement with many organisations especially the Ramblers.

The garden and bench were last vandalised in October 2014 when repairs were carried out by council staff with the assistance of a local resident.

Ongar Town Council chairman councillor Jim Browning said: “I am saddened to see the contempt that some people show to public property.

"The council will replace the bench but please remember that this will have to be taken from the ratepayers. The funds will have to be diverted from other projects.

"Staff will be looking at CCTV images to see if the culprits can be identified to the police.”
