July 2016 - Upcoming events, community notices, and updates from Sustainable Kingston.

Official Launch
Kingscourt Groundbreakers

On July 19, Red Squirrel Conservation Services, the Kingscourt Community Association (KCA), the City of Kingston and others will be launching Kingscourt Groundbreakers, a community project that will help Kingscourt residents reduce basement flooding by planting rain gardens and implementing other stormwater management measures on their property.

Because of its shallow clay soil (among other contributing factors) some parts of Kingscourt experience flooding after heavy rainfalls or snow melts. In coming weeks, Red Squirrel and the KCA will be canvassing Kingscourt to learn more about the extent of local stormwater flooding so that, next year, community residents can work together to install professionally designed rain gardens and other measures - at no financial cost to them - that will mitigate or eliminate the flooding issues.

BENEATH OUR FEET

Part of the 2016 Kick & Push Festival

In a world marked by environmental destruction, how do we deal with the ghosts?

Beneath Our Feet is an acrobatic folk opera spanning 200 000 years of human history and reflecting on the ways were haunted by the loss of the natural world. Combining the talents of a multi-instrumental singer-songwriter with a high flying circus artist, this interdisciplinary duet goes beyond spectacle to explore the relationship between grief and place, memory and time, and the body in the environment. Expect an evocative live musical score, haunting aerial dances and a unique storytelling approach in this one of a kind performance.
