"To be a professional interpreter also means being a professional. It means that we form part of a great, if sometimes less than coherent, community of practice"

"To be a professional interpreter means that you join the family of other interpreters, wherever they work, whomever they work for. That means that some things need to be changed by groups, such as professional associations, campaign groups, and PR teams. While we are each responsible to join and reflect the values of the interpreting community, the community needs to work as a unit to help bring about precisely the kinds of changes in how interpreting is valued..."

Prevention and protection in stalking situations
Stalking is a common phenomenon with research indicating that over 20% of Victorians are subjected to harassment at some stage of their life.

National and international studies have shown that those working with mental health clients are particularly vulnerable to this form of harassment.

However, there are ways to reduce the risks of victimisation through relatively simple preventative and management strategies.
This workshop will provide a brief overview of the literature on stalking and on various types of stalkers.
This will be followed by discussion on the risks associated with stalking, both in general and those relevant to specific stalking types.
Recommendations for organisational policy in terms of prevention and management, as well as considerations for personal protection, will be discussed in detail.

Presenter:
Dr Rachel MacKenzie is a senior clinical and forensic psychologist with  Forensicare, and also works with stalking victims in private practice.  She has published extensively on the topic of stalking, conducts training nationally and internationally, and is the lead author of the Stalking Risk Profile: Guidelines for the Assessment and Management of Stalkers (SRP).

Exciting Announcement!

On the 3rd – 5th August 2017 will be an international interpreters and translator’s conference in Brisbane.  This Federation of Interpreters and Translators (FIT) Conference, is unique in the way that ASLIA (Queensland) and AUSIT are working together to organise it and it will be the first time that Sign Language Interpreting will be included. There will be numerous streams within the conference, and one stream will be dedicated purely to Sign Language Interpreting.
We need your assistance! A call for papers is open, and we need Sign Language Interpreting abstract submissions by the 1st October 2016.
The emphasis of the FIT Congress 2017 will be on issues relating to disruption and diversification in all the fields of translation and interpreting.  The 2017 Congress will highlight the impacts of technology, globalisation, policy and economic change on the delivery of language services, with specific streams for indigenous and sign languages, interpreting in conflict zones, community interpreting and translation, and literary translation.  Presenting at the FIT Congress 2017 offers a valuable opportunity to meet members of the Translation and Interpreting professionals, academics, service providers and other stakeholders.

FIT invites all those interested – practitioners, academics, students, agencies, software makers and policy makers, accreditation bodies, and buyers of services -to submit your proposal in an English word document or a video in Auslan or International Sign Language.
For more information please head to http://www.fit2017.org/

If you have any questions please feel free to email Kahli Timms (ASLIAQ President)  at president@asliaqld.org

An introduction video is available in Auslan and International Sign Language here – https://youtu.be/VCGdm_WZesg

OPPORTUNITY
Call for translators to support WASLI

WASLI is looking for dedicated translators who are willing to support our organisation. Our aim is to serve the global community of all concerned by sign language interpreting. At the moment most of our documents are in English. We are aware that this leaves some of the regions we represent at a disadvantage. In order to solve this, WASLI wishes to offer news and information in multiple languages.
