Celebrating the first 10 years of Sheffield Civic Trust
We celebrated our 10th Birthday Party on Wednesday 22nd June at Tamper Coffee, which won a Sheffield Design Award in 2014. Simon Gedye, SCT Chair, looks back on our first 10 years and achievements:

"It was ten years ago in June 2006 we launched Sheffield Civic Trust. At the time I felt disconnected with the city – that I had no say in the up and coming developments and many people felt the same.

I worked in Leeds where the Civic Trust was well organised and influences the shape of their city in a pro active way, so when English Heritage and the Yorkshire Association of Civic Trusts set about setting up a Trust in Sheffield - the only core city without one – I jumped at the opportunity and we set up a steering group.

It was enthusiasm that drove us and it was notable how many young faces made up the first board of trustees.

10 years later and we have achieved a great deal...
  • The Sheffield Design awards are a bi-annual event, now lead by the Trust;
  • The People's award is now well established and has honoured some unexpected buildings;
  • Heritage Open Days in Sheffield is established as one of the most innovative and well subscribed events in the UK (see more details below);
  • We hold regular debates and discussions about a wide range of topics;
  • We have established a supporters network of 1700 subscribers;
  • And we have commented on and influenced key developments in the city.
Best of all, there is terrific enthusiasm for our new and ongoing activities, for example on housing and cataloging all the war memorials in the city.

Our events and trustees meetings continue to be well attended, enjoyable and full of energy. Our volunteers are always offering to take on tasks and deliver the work that the Trust takes on.

I'd like to take the opportunity to thank everyone who has contributed over the last 10 years. If you would like to join us in any way please do get in touch. You can contact us at info@sheffieldcivictrust.org.uk"
The Keith Hayman Award - open call for nominations
In 2013 our founding member Keith Hayman, a city planner, keen cyclist, artist and campaigner, sadly passed away. To celebrate his work we established the Keith Hayman Award at the Sheffield Design Awards to honour an outstanding contribution to cycling or public art in Sheffield. The inaugural award was won in 2014 by Sheffield Friday Night Ride for their outstanding contribution to the cycling experience in Sheffield.

In October at this year's Design Awards we will award the second Keith Hayman Award and we would like to get your suggestions for nominees. What do you think are the best new schemes or initiatives that have improved cycling or public art in Sheffield in the last two years?

You can send your nominations to us at info@sheffieldcivictrust.org.uk and please make your submissions by the end of July. A short supporting statement about your nomination and a photo would also be very useful. The award will be judged by the Trustees of Sheffield Civic Trust.
