My Work Experience by Shekenah Dias

In Year 10 at West Hatch everyone gets the opportunity to do Work Experience.

To prepare us we had an assembly in the Spring when Mrs Muscatt encouraged us to use the experience and try out different working possibilities.

I’ve always felt passionate about English and Journalism. Initially I was going to do my work experience at Tess Education but unfortunately I wasn’t able to travel to the location. Instead, the school arranged for me to do my work experience with Mrs Haines, where I would be doing the role of Marketing Assistant.

I had an interview just before half-term with Mrs Haines where she explained the important aspects of journalism and prepared me for my first day which was July 6. I needed to be prepared by having a notebook and pen with me at all times, along with an Iphone to take photographs.

On Thursday, July 7, the school was hosting a fundraising concert for the Music Department.

Mrs Haines and I were sorting out the raffle tickets along with Zachary and others. The raffle raised £64. I was luckily able to watch the music show where Imogen Stevens really stood out singing ‘Make you feel my love’ by Adele. And the choir of 18 students performing ‘Let it go’ from the movie Frozen, Riptide and
Living on a Prayer from the legendary Bon Jovi.

Attending the school’s concert showed me that West Hatch High School truly does have talent!

The next day I came on site and gave the money to finance, which I had the responsibility of looking after over night. I also took the West Hatch flag and blue sheet used for the table setting to Mrs Mitchell, our Head Teacher’s PA, and the remaining prizes from the raffle to Mrs Haines office.

On Monday, July 11, my fellow students started their first day of Work Experience. I had started mine early because of meeting the publication dates of Hatching Out and the e-newsletter.

Jada Can-Jones did her Work Experience at Seven Kings Primary School. Jada wants to work with children and saidit was “interesting however extremely challenging and requires a lot of patience”.

Emilio Vrahimi did his Work Experience at a media company and said: “It’s extremely challenging but interesting at the same time, requires excellent organisation and ability to prioritize work."

Ruby Abery did her work experience with Soccer Six and said: “I enjoyed doing make-up for modeling shoots even though it was extremely stressful as it’s so easy to make mistakes.”

On Tuesday, July 12, I was on site all day.

I arrived at 9.30am and collected all the charity boxes needed for the day's event and carried them to Student Services.

At 11.15am Mr David Jackman, the schools’ Press Officer, filmed Mrs Reid and Mr D’Silva for the e-newsletter thanking students for the enthusiasm they put in all year for sporting events.

At 11:30am I was filmed and explained what I’ve been doing for Work Experience and the many skills I have learnt.

The Chairman of Epping Forest District Council, councillor Jeane Lea, arrived at midday and when she arrived I explained to her where her reserved parking was. I walked her over to the main Reception where we met with Mrs Howarth. Myself along with Jess and Matthew (two Year 9 students) walked the Chairman over to the basketball courts to welcome back the bike riders: Mr Windsor, Mr Sinfield, Mr Blain, Mrs Shillaker and Mr Cowen.

Unfortunately it began to rain heavily and so the event was moved to the hall where I walked the Chair over carrying her umbrella.

I stayed at school for the afternoon and helped to sort out the stationery cupboard.

On Wednesday I officially finished my on-site Work Experience with Mrs Haines, having to writing up my article by the end of the weekend. During the day I also helped Mrs Mackintosh sort out sheets, working during my lunch hour.

I enjoyed working with Joe Mulvihill-Young and we workedwell as a team. Joe, Miss Lola and I cleaned the stationery cupboard and packed out the new stock that arrived earlier that day. I also had to help get everything ready for the staff party on Friday evening.

I have enjoyed doing my Work Experience at West Hatch High School. I would like to thank Mrs Haines and Ms Lola for the amazing opportunity I have had.

Performing Arts is extremely important to me and I hopefully would love to perform in the West End. On the other hand it is not always secure, therefore my other career would be journalism.

I have learnt many important skills such as communication, writing, listening and speaking. I have also recognised that time keeping and availability when others need you have to be important priorities.

Journalism and Performing Arts could possibly be similar because they share the same skills
and expectations.
