Commercial Accommodation Monitor (CAM)

Download the Northland Commercial Accommodation Monitor - May 2016.

Monthly Snapshot
Guest night growth for New Zealand dropped in May, driven by lower levels of domestic accommodation activity throughout the country. Northland nights dropped 1.5%, a larger drop than the overall decline across the country of 0.4%. The larger drop in Northland reflects the relatively higher proportions of domestic accommodation activity, here compared to the national average. Within Northland, Whangarei nights had the largest drop, again reflecting our exposure to domestic business travel.

Year End data
Northland growth rate of 2.3% is behind the national growth rate of 5.3%, reflecting the higher proportions of international visitor nights on average in other locations. Whangarei nights continues to decline and bring down the Northland regional average, while Far North nights are increasing above their national average, based on continuing international visitor leisure growth.

TRENZ: NZ’s biggest annual international tourism event

TRENZ 2016 was held in Rotorua back in May, with a strong showing from Northland businesses at the annual event. A total of 12 operators showcased in the Northland stand (including three first timers) with a number of other Northland businesses represented in the national section. There was overwhelming positivity at both a regional and national level and we were impressed at the buyer engagement.

We would love to grow Northland’s presence again next year. TRENZ 2017 will be held in Auckland and Northland Inc will again offer a First Time to TRENZ support programme and booth set up support. Contact Karly if you’re interested in finding out more.

Trade famils

Northland hosted a total of 46 famil participants from China, UK, Europe, North America, South America, Japan, Singapore, Philippines, India and Australia in the weeks leading up to and following TRENZ. The participants were able to visit a variety of trade ready products across Northland. Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive from buyers.

Already new Northland itineraries have been created based on the agents' experience in Northland.

One agent has already booked a trip for a client to Northland only two days after returning from her trip. The client had originally meant to head to the Coromandel but the agent persuaded them to visit Northland instead.
