The Curio: Curative's selection of things that have us thinking...

A note from us....

Finding our voice for a better world

It's been a very interesting past few weeks around the world and here in Aotearoa. Recent events compelling the #BlackLivesMatter community in the US to exclaim what's no longer acceptable, to clamour for an overhaul of a reality they've quietly accepted till now. Families in Aotearoa bellowing the injustices of an absurd housing situation. Disenfranchised communities on all sides of the #Brexit conversation making their stories known. Communities rising up to tell their side of the story; to share their vision of what needs to change, so we can all be better.

It's a very interesting time to be alive right now – diverse voices who have experienced several lifetimes of oppression are finally getting their stories out, telling their version of what a better world means for them, and for everyone.

As we continue to collaborate with incredible communities, organisations and individuals, and as we feel the pulse of our world with its different constituents emerging from silence, we are perpetually reminded that it is through people's stories of what's unwanted, what hasn't worked or what no longer works that the first seeds of a new, better way of doing things can emerge.

Here's a sneak peek of 'Charlie', who is part of an initiative we're launching soon to get more people involved on the Teach First NZ programme. Teach First NZ ultimately aims to help disadvantaged kiwi kids improve their education outcomes, while moulding new graduates to become inspirational leaders in our wider society. Currently, 305,000 kiwi kids right now are living in poverty and starting school with all the odds stacked against them. Common Ground is a place of support for parents, whānau and friends of young people going through hard times. In this refreshed version of the site, we're providing new avenues for people to tell their stories and seek the answers they need. The new Ask for Advice section connects people with a panel of experts who collectively have the knowledge, experience and thirst for life to provide potent guidance for concerns big or small. View the new Common Ground here »

Finally, Jade and Eddy are asking the bigger questions in and around design and impact, so they're opening the conversation to other social design agencies in the US and Canada, as part of their North American trip later this year. We envision learnings from these exchanges would ultimately contribute to our social design landscape here in Aotearoa. Read Jade's open call for conversation and collaboration here Â»

And that's it for this month's edition! Stay engaged, tell your story, stay awesome.
