Summer fun in the sun (rain mostly)

Summer has been busy for the WAW team!  Nearly every weekend our volunteers are at events, collections, car boot sales or stalls raising money for WAW, raising awareness of the charity and the importance of responsible pet ownership.  Remember to go over and say ‘hello’ if you see one of our stalls.

FREE Dog Micro-chipping event

In April 2016 it became the law that any dog over eight weeks old had to be micro-chipped.  If you have still not sorted out your dog, we are holding an event in partnership with the Dogs Trust, where you can get your dog chipped for FREE:

Monday 12 September, 11am-3pm
Radley Common Comm. Centre Car Park

More events are available from the Dogs Trust at www.chipmydog.co.uk.

Poor Roland!

Roland came to WAW in July and became the 85th cat in our care!  He is a lovely boy and only 8 months old. His condition is just neglect and with the medication he is now on should hopefully be feeling better very soon. Sadly Roland is not a stray and was actually someone’s cat who could longer care for him.  Updates on Roland's progress will be on our Facebook.

168 mile bike ride for ‘Hectors House’
This July, a long term WAW supporter raised nearly £500 by completing a challenging Coast 2 Coast Bike Ride, cycling 168 miles over 2 days from Morecambe to Scarborough.

Ian was inspired to raise the money after he and his wife, Kate adopted Hector – a 13 year old cat, who came to WAW after his owner sadly died. He was not in a good way and had to undergo treatment for his teeth and abscess.

Ian said, “Although I am a keen cyclist, this was a challenge I set which I knew would test myself both physically and mentally.  Being a supporter of WAW and having previously adopted two cats from WAW (Leia, now 4 and Hector, 13) and a Guinea Pig called Maureen, I was keen to also raise funds for WAW after seeing the fantastic work and commitment involved in bringing Hector back to health.  So I thought cycling coast to coast was a great idea for both myself and WAW.  Even though some of the cycle was tough, I am just glad to help such a  wonderful charity that assist our furry friends.”

Part of the money raised will be used to refurbish a ‘cat pod’ at the centre – which will be called ‘Hectors House’ in honour of Hector.   Each pod costs £300 to refurbish, once refurbished each pod will have a plaque with details of the donation and its name.  Contact us if you would like to refurbish and name a pod – maybe in the memory of your loved pets.

Goodbye & good luck Mutley...

Mutley and his three legs was at WAW for a long time before he found his new home – despite his age, grey hair and lack of a leg he was full of energy.  He finally found an active retirement home, where he enjoys going out for walks, playing with his toys and getting lots of love and fuss.  Good Luck Mutley – we miss you x

Duke – the house Bob Cat finally goes home!!

Duke was a long stay cat, looking for his home for months from March 2015 to October 2015 with no end in sight. In October 2015 we published an appeal after Duke had been living in his cat pod for 214 days, as we were worried he may never find his home.  The appeal worked and Duke, or Batman as he was called at the centre was soon ruling the roost in his new home.

According to his new owner, he is doing well and is still as cheeky (bossy) as ever. Loves to play so much and is very spoilt!

BIG THANKS - Donations

Local businesses continue to support the work we do by kindly donating pet food and supplies - all of which helps us to keep going.

Also thanks to Wade Deacon High school in Widnes who raised £200.51 from a cake bake.

A special thanks again to Gaynor and the Virgin Trains staff who have donated £1,000+ raised from selling second hand books at Bank Quay station – remember if you have any old books, you can drop them off at the station.

We also have lovely supporters who often drop into the centre with donations, we can't thank YOU ALL enough.

Alf's Tea Party

Big thanks to Judith and her WAW rescue dog Alfred (Alf for short) who kindly sent us a cheque from money raised from Alfred’s ‘Birthday Treasure Hut’ and ‘Strawberry Tea’ which he had for his friends and their humans.

Judith adopted Alf 6 years ago when he was only 9 months old, she said “I cannot believe it’s been 6 years.  He is my best friend and he is enjoying life to the full.”

Maybe your next best friend is waiting for you at WAW check out our Facebook and website for dogs who are looking for their forever homes!

If you would like to hold a charity event in aid of WAW then we would be happy to help to advise and promote, check the ‘Getting Involved’ section of our website for more information.

Our smaller furry friends...

It’s not just cats and dogs at WAW - don’t forget WAW has lots of rabbits and guinea pigs looking for their forever homes too!  Here are just a few - check out more on our website.

From rescue dogs to Dementia Friends in two weeks...

Two WAW rescue dogs are proving to be a hit at a residential home for elderly people living with Dementia.  Fudge and Harry a loving pair of Jack Russell Terriers, adopted from WAW this summer have, have stolen the hearts of the residents, when their new owner took them in for a visit.

Owner Shirley said, “They settled in so quickly and we knew that their warm loving nature would be a hit with the residents in the home.

A representative from the home said, “The residents had a lovely time petting them. They brought so much joy.”

These sweethearts are now official ‘Dementia Friends’ and will be regular visitors to the home. Their visits brought a lot of smiles, happiness and they also got lots of cuddles.

Centre update...

Dogs…
Since our kennels opened earlier this year, we have rarely had an empty kennel. We always have more dogs than there are available kennel spaces or fosterers needing to be rehomed.

This year we are seeing unprecedented levels of dogs needing new homes, including high level of toy and designer breeds!  Cute guys like these, some of which are still looking for a home  - a special  home - as they tend to have behaviour issues, such as anxiety and fear, due to being products of puppy farms and back-yard breeders.  Check out the dogs looking for homes on our website.

Dog exercise area...
At our centre, the dogs are currently walked along the public paths nearby, but to keep our dogs occupied while staying in the kennels, we are starting to fundraise for a sheltered dog exercise area to be built. This would mean the dogs would have an enclosed environment to be let off their leads and exercised - perfect for playing and training activities.

Late night opening...
We now have a late night opening on Thursdays (till 7pm) for potential adopters who find it difficult to get to the centre during work hours in the week.  We plan to continue until the end of August to take advantage of the light nights.  So let's hope it's a success and gets some more lovely homes for our animals.

Site Improvements...
We have also been sprucing up the outside areas to make it a more comfortable and inviting space for our animals, putting up flower patterned netting that was donated to us by a local Housing Trust, Torus (made up of Helena Homes in St Helens and Golden Gates in Warrington).  If you would like to volunteer to help keep the centre tidy e.g. carrying out basic maintenance, gardening etc. we would love to hear from you, find out more here.

Cats & Kittens...
As it is kitten season, there are also many kittens being brought in, and right now we have a whopping 85 cats at the centre or with our fosterers looking for homes.  Here are just a few - check out the rest on our website.

Daryl - look at him now!!

Come We all met Daryl in April when, as a stray, he was taken to Beech House vets, he had his collar wedged in his jaw and was  in a desperate state.  His collar had clearly been stuck in his mouth for a while and he was in considerable pain.
Thanks to generous WAW supports, enough   money was raised to help Daryl and over the next few months he had a number of procedures to deal with his teeth, a broken and infected jaw.  Whilst at the vets he soon became a firm favourite with the staff, due to his loving nature.

Now fully recovered and enjoying life in his new home, Daryl’s new mum Lauren said, “I can't get over how loving he is when he's had such a hard time.  He is such a cheeky chappy and enjoys getting into mischief. The jaw doesn't stop him doing anything! The Vets are amazed by how well he looks and how much he has improved both with his health and weight.”

“He is happiest playing with Roscoe, his puppy sidekick.  They are the best of friends, chasing each other around the garden then curling up together on the sofa.”

“I cannot thank you enough for bringing my not so little man into my life.  And I would like to personally thank everyone who made a donation, send best wishes to WAW and the staff at Beech House vets.”

If you would like to make donation to help us to continue to help animals like Daryl, there are lots of ways to donate, find out more here.

WAW Stickies...

Most animals do not stay long at WAW, but   every now and again we have certain animals that just aren't able to catch a break – these are our STICKY PETS...

Zara is a stunning 3 year old, female   Pointer who can be a little nervous but loves being with other dogs. She has good recall but needs a little work and is OK on the lead. She does appear to have some separation anxiety so ideally needs a family who are around for most of the day and with another dog as a companion.

Hooch who despite getting national press coverage, is still looking for her forever home.  This poor girl has spent her entire life in and out of rescues.  She is a 7 year old Boxer/Mastiff X and a big loveable, well behaved lump. She is looking for a home where she is the only dog.  Fortunately Hooch is with a foster family until she finds her new home.

Gizmo, Cherry & Treacle are a trio of 3-5 year old cats who have residing at WAW for a number of months now.  They came to use when their owner could no longer care for them. Gizmo is the ginger male who is a little bit shy, Cherry is the cute black and white girl who loves a cuddle, and Treacle is the tortie girl who is the most nervous (and likes to hide in her litter tray!).  They can be rehomed together or separately, though Gizmo and Cherry love to snuggle together and seem quite close.

Gentle giants: Lola, Trixie & Blue..

Sometimes it’s harder to rehome bigger dogs.  Their sheer size and strength can put people off.  Meet three gentle giants who found loving new homes.

Lola
came to WAW because her owner was having a baby.  Due to her size and strength it took a while to find Lola a new home. Eventually a lady called Melissa saw her true nature and offered her a forever home.

Trixie came to WAW due to a relationship breakdown and was with us for two months before she found a new home.  New owner Darryl said, “I cannot fault her, she is loveable, caring and loyal friend.  She follows me everywhere.  Initially we were worried about her size as we had never had a dog as big before.  I was concerned about her knocking my   elderly mum who uses a wheelchair.  But the first thing Trixie did was gently placed her head on my mum’s knee and at that moment we knew she was for us.  She has settled in   really well and we love her lots and cannot imagine life without her.”

Blue was a 12 month old Weimaraner/Bull Mastiff cross, he was huge and handsome!!  This typical adolescent boy was cheeky, affectionate and clumsy – he did not know what to do with his long Weim legs matched up with his massive Mastiff head.  Blue loved everyone and everything – but it took someone special to see past his size and strength to offer him a new home.

His new owner Clare said, “We invested a lot of time in his training, having a bigger dog means them understanding they are not the boss.  It was worth it, we have a loyal, affectionate dog with a great personality.  He does take up a lot of space though – since we got him we have bought him his own sofa!  I would not be without him, I love him to bits.”

Puppy Love...

We had quite a job when nine Rottie X puppies landed unexpectedly at the centre at only an hour old.  Those tiny sightless bundles soon became gorgeous fluffy balls of energy – we truly had our hands full! But it was all worth it, as they are all now all in fantastic homes…check out:
