Lounge 2 is open!
The completely refurbished Lounge 2 at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol has officially opened. Kossmann.dejong designed the new interior of this international distinctive lounge. It comprises seven thematic ‘worlds’ across two floors, with a total surface area of 16,000 square metres, from which annually over 15 million people will travel to their foreign destinations.

The interior and architecture (by Benthem Crouwel NACO) were designed in an integrated way. The brief was to design a lounge, where travellers can relax and meet each other, but also to create a surprising experience. “You’ll easily spend two hours waiting if you need to transfer,” according to Herman Kossmann. “By being able to wander and explore, those hours should be enjoyable.”

Seven Worlds, one universe
When travellers enter the renewed lounge on the second floor, they immediately have a phenomenal view across a large part of the lounge and the aeroplanes on the platform. Lounge 2 comprises seven experiential ‘worlds’ that offer something for everyone, from a luxury goods section to a children’s playground paradise. Distinct materials and details give each world a special atmosphere and identity. Therefore travellers will automatically be attracted to certain worlds and find their way intuitively, without the need for specific signage. The floor of large concrete tiles and the black-slatted ceiling combined with sustainable LED strips, visually hold all the different elements of the lounge together.

Social lounge full of surprises
The challenge was to also turn Lounge 2 into a ‘social lounge’, with surprising aspects and space for spontaneous encounters. Herman Kossmann: “We have taken the interior design for Lounge 2 to the next level by emphasising the notion of storytelling. A large amount of exciting objects – such as hordes of ceramic cows, real trees, a window onto the luggage conveyor belt and a spectacular playground in the shape of a large aeroplane– offer surprising experiences, food for discussion and possibilities to meet each other. These narrative elements make Lounge 2 part of the travel adventure and should lead to a memorable experience.”

Tailored design
Kossmann.dejong has designed a wide range of bespoke pieces of furniture and objects for Lounge 2. The white tiled benches in the ‘Modern Dutch World’, for instance, round wooden seating for the central square, luxury armchairs in the ‘Luxury World’, glass walls with embedded real medicinal herbs in the ‘Care & Wellness World’ and green picnic benches in the ‘Family World’. As well as these features, the central information desk and all information points have been considered as part of the overall design.

Time flies
At an airport everything is about time, which is why Kossmann.dejong invited designer Maarten Baas to come up with an adapted version of his ‘Real Time’ video clock. The version in Lounge 2, with a diameter of 3 metres, has been given a central position in the lounge. The life-size workman paints and polishes every minute the hands of the clock 24-hours a day. Thus checking the time has become more than functional in Lounge 2: you can watch it for hours.
