Seafood Spotlight: Acadian Redfish
Acadian Redfish
Acadian redfish came to be a staple protein for the U.S. military in the 1940's and 1950's, but stocks reached record lows in the 1980's. Strict management measures resulted in U.S. stocks declared recovered in June 2012. The fish has struggled with popularity with consumers such that in 2010, only 23% of this quota was landed, and this number only slightly rose to 30% in 2013.

Today, there is a lot of attention on promoting this sustainable, affordable, and versatile fish including EDF's Eat These Fish campaign and GMRI's Out of the Blue campaign. Additionally, as of this month, there is now MSC-certified Acadian redfish available (fishery also includes haddock and Atlantic pollock). We have a new seafood guide for Acadian redfish that includes summaries on sourcing, culinary characteristics, conservation criteria, sustainability, and more: FishChoice's Acadian redfish sustainable seafood guide
