Distance Training, Trail Race Report

Middle Distance Training

BRRC’s Mid-Distance Training Group got underway this week in preparation for Fall races. While the target race for this group is the Half Marathon in the Baltimore Running Festival, the coaching is helping all participants prepare for Fall races in distances of 8 miles to a half marathon. Speed training is held at Goucher College on Thursday evenings and long runs are held on Saturday mornings at Loch Raven Reservoir.

What? You’re not part of the group? It not too late to join them to get ready for your Fall race. For more information or to register for the Mid-Distance Training Group, check out the Training Programs page on the BRRC Website under Programs. Also contact RRCA Certified Lead Coach, Karen Malinowski for more information about the Mid-Distance Training Group.

Would you rather run during the bitter cold and windy winter or during the hot and humid dog days of summer?
We'll post the results next month!

Sweet Air Trail Race Report

By: Tom Nasuta

Just wanted to share a few observations about the Sweet Air Trail Run this morning if you did not already get a race report. In modern social media terms. LIKE, LIKE, LIKE.

1. Bart Rein and Darryn Waugh are diamonds as race directors. This race was organized in a manner that Chris Cuccuzella and Rick Bingham would be proud of. Chris and Rick were the 2 guys that introduced trail running to BRRC and created the foundation for our trail running program. They are former club presidents that had a strong vision for BRRC.

2. The course was extremely well marked and no one got lost or off course. You might think this is a minor comment, but runners get off course and lost in races all over the country. It looks easy planting flags over 8 miles. But when you see the various trails and options available, this is a critical task. A++.

3. Water Stop was excellent. There is nothing more beautiful in the world than seeing a water stop with Hazel Teal and Karen Fisher in the middle of no where. These volunteers were critical letting runners know that they were over half way done. Experienced runners know to carry water, new trail runners were saved by our volunteers at this water stop in the hot humid temperatures.  A++

4. Race Registration is always a pleasure when Dan Macedo and Suzie Boltz are there. Hazel and Karen did double duty assisting here as well. Runners are always greeted professionally and made to feel welcome. Questions about the course are never discouraged. Again A++

5. Course included technical trails with mud, hills, beautiful mud, roots, stream crossings, mud, corn fields, etc. Basically this course was incredible. I wish it was longer! I heard that there were some bee stings, but this is all part of running trails where you are not part of an urban environment. Sorry to report no bears, no snakes, just a wonderful trail run through the forest.

6. Post Race food included popsickles and watermelon. Fantastic.

7. Did you know that this is a zero waste event? All cups, bottles and race materials are recycled and the organic materials are composted.

Other volunteers included Phillip Pawlukovich, Don Riley and Thomas Haine
This was a fantastic event this morning and one of the best parts of BRRC.
