REGISTRATION OPEN! MDE Back-to-School Conference
Make plans to join us for the 2016 MDE/MASA Back to School Conference, August 9-10 at the Minneapolis Marriott Northwest. Our keynote speaker will be Joanne Quinn, and every participant will receive a copy of her latest book, Coherence - The Right Drivers in Action for Schools, Districts, and Systems, co-authored with Michael Fullan. Our conference theme will echo that title with sessions resonant of Minnesota’s commitment to the drivers of effective education leadership. We will also have opportunities to hear from Ted Christ of the Center for Applied Research and Educational Improvement (CAREI) at the University of Minnesota as well as a variety of breakout sessions of interest as you prepare for the upcoming year. Bring a team and benefit from the chance to discuss how what you are learning impacts your own district. The conference follows the MSBA Summer Seminar, and our new superintendents will want to stay on Wednesday afternoon for our first session of the Great Start Cohort.

REGISTER TODAY Great Start Cohort for New Superintendents
MASA is committed to providing excellent professional development that will support you in your professional practice. As a member of the Great Start Cohort (GSC), you will have the opportunity to meet other new leaders, receive information from seasoned leaders, and develop practical skills designed to help you be successful in the first year of your new position. In addition to the five traditional workshops (linked to statewide conferences for travel and schedule ease), participants will also receive access to the GSC Online Toolbox and mobile app filled with supporting documents and videos on popular topics. Continuing Education Units (CEUs) will be granted for each session in the series. Whether you are an experienced administrator or are new to your leadership role, this workshop series is a wonderful opportunity to network with your colleagues and enhance your skills.

Need to Renew Your Teacher License? Free Member Service Provides Required PD Content 
MASA members may use the online ExpertEase video library to access professional development in the five content areas required for teacher license renewal.  The library is a partnership with Infinitec.  Many districts have elected district-wide membership with Infinitec, but MASA members may access the MASA Leadership library whether or not your district is also an Infinitec member. When you watch a video, you will have the option of taking a short quiz, after which you will receive a certificate that may be used to support your teacher licensure renewal.  This is a free service for MASA members.  If you would like to review a list of video titles, find them on the MASA web site.

  • Enter requested registration information and check

Planning, Preparing, and Conducting Summative Evaluations

Participants will discuss and define “formative” and “summative” performance ratings as it relates to teacher evaluation and as it connects with your local vision for TDE. Summative evaluators will explore practices for evaluating (scoring) individual components (e.g., classroom observations, student academic growth measures) as well as different methods for combining multiple measures into a single summative rating. Through this workshop, participants will assess and improve how summative evaluations are conducted locally, just in time to share improvements with teachers as they return from summer break.

Introduction to Peer Review: A Roadmap for Success for New Peer Reviewers

This workshop will provide new peer reviewers with the “how” knowledge for their new role and responsibilities. Participants will learn a variety of techniques and tools to apply in pre- and post-observation conferences to help teachers build their capacity. Participants will use current district rubrics to practice observation and coaching skills that connect the observation process with teacher effectiveness. Participants will be able to identify critical features of the teacher observation cycle, apply questioning and listening techniques to observation conferences, and use district rubrics to assist teachers to increase student achievement.

This workshop will enable teams to identify the critical features that create a results-based focus by using data to improve student learning. Participants will practice protocols used to examine student data and reflect on classroom work. Through practice and discussion, teams will inquire into and discuss changes in instructional practices that lead to increased student achievement. Participants will identify the critical learning team features, apply and discuss protocols for adult work to set goals and plan instruction, and apply and analyze protocols for examining student work.

Improving the Design and Implementation of Local Teacher Development and Evaluation Models

This workshop is designed for leadership teams (including district and teacher leadership) that seek to improve the design and implementation of their local TDE models. Participants will collaboratively evaluate their local TDE model and the implementation of that model. A design and implementation rubric will be shared along with some best practices regarding program implementation. Workshop activities will help local teams identify strengths and opportunities for improvement. Additionally, teams will identify data systems for assessing the fidelity of implementation, including the use of teacher, principal, and district staff surveys. This workshop is designed to give local teams the tools they need to improve the design and implementation of their TDE plan.

Building PreK–3 Systems: From Alignment to Coherence

MASA is pleased to be partnering with MDE and the Minnesota Elementary Principals Association (MESPA) to offer a significant professional development series for district teams. This four-day series is the third part in a professional learning series designed to support MN schools, communities & districts with implementing effective, comprehensive PreK–3 systems. Continue your PreK Professional Development training in your district with BuildingPreK–3 Systems: From Alignment to Coherence. Don’t miss this unique opportunity with Michael Fullan and Joanne Quinn as they share their research and deep insights about improving schools and children’s learning experiences. 

This series is based on Fullan & Quinn's Coherence: The Right Drivers in Action for Schools Districts, and Systems. Superintendent and Principal-led leadership teams will progress from analysis to action, achieving coherence in four areas:
  1. Focusing Direction: Refine and monitor the district's direction while assessing the impact of PreK–3 strategies.
  2. Cultivating Collaborative Work Cultures: Build precision in facilitating collaborative work cultures.
  3. Deepening Learning: Assess the current district conditions fostering deep learning.
  4. Leading for Coherence and Mastering the Framework: Building a commonly-owned approach and fostering leadership in the system.
$50/day for a 4-day series! Build your leadership team to suit your needs! (Must register at least one superintendent and one principal per team.) General registration opens June 29. Student Engagement: Measuring Teacher Impact for Success

Participants will define student engagement and discuss measures of student engagement in the context of teacher development and evaluation systems. Student surveys, teacher observation, and other strategies will be discussed as measurement tools. Student Learning Goals: Designing and Improving Systems for Student Success

This workshop is designed for peer reviewers with 2-5 years of experience. Participants will increase their peer review skills by refining current practices, tools, and strategies already in place. Participants will learn how to maximize individual teacher strengths, scaffold post-observation conferences based on evidence, and align individual growth and development plans with school goals to further teacher growth. Participants will also receive tools and practices to conduct difficult conversations.
