Teamwork: The Focus Of Camps
From the beginning intro to camps, to the final team skills competition, the kids had the highest level of enthusiasm! This was a key factor in ensuring that the drills, teaching sessions, guest speaker and 'Factory" stations would allow the campers to retain what they learned.

The biggest change that we witnessed as coaches during the weeks of camp, was the high level of interest the kids displayed during games in which they were not playing . Each day we saw an increased interest in which team was winning, and how they banded together to either root for or against a particular team. This was interesting because on the first day, we saw many that were not playing, just 'waiting" for their chance to play. We posted video clips from the championship game, and you can see across the gym how the two teams that were not playing were very engaged in the outcome of the game. This was precisely what we were going for, teamwork, supporting one another, banding together to be a part of the team.

The team shooting drill that we conducted throughout the week, called the "Kansas Shooting Drill", was a jump shooting drill in which the team that makes the required number of baskets first, wins. Our goal by conducting this drill multiple times each day and in between games, was to have each team at the end of the week, select their teams' best shooter to compete individually, representing their team. The first couple of days, everyone on their respective team, wanted to "be that shooter", but by the last day, as we were about to begin the team Kansas Shooting Drill skills competition, we saw each team voluntarily selecting their "actual" best shooter! Talk about success! They didn't realized that they grew as a team by playing game after game, allowing them to recognize their strengths as a team.

This continued with the ball handling portion of the skills competition. What a rewarding process to watch!
Teaching Sessions Were a Vital Part of Our Camps
Coach T's nephew, Haden Thompson, a senior at the University of Mary Washington, speaks to the campers about ball handling skills. Haden is a 6' 3" shooting/point guard and captain on the basketball team at UMW. He shared with them the difference between being in the gym, going through the motions and working to get better. The kids really enjoyed having a college player to show them the proper way to train.
Coach RJ Spelsberg came down from Virginia to share with the kids what it takes to be a state champion and how he made it to be a state championship coach. What an honor it was to have a former player take the time to share with our kids!
Coach Malcolm "Bo" Meriwether taught the campers the key to good defense and how it makes the biggest impact in every game. Having a former player come back and share what he's learned as a coach is why we are confident that we will continue to grow and keep our core values intact. Coach Bo was the best point guard that I ever had the pleasure of coaching.
Coach Matt Wolfgang taught about the correct shooting form. We use the acronym B.E.E.F. "B" is for Balance, "E" for Eyes on the basket, "E" for Elbow in and "F" for Follow through. Coach Matt an I coached together at Randolph College, a division 3 school in Lynchburg Virginia.
Coach RJ Spelsberg presented Coach T with a Monacan High School State Championship T shirt and a piece of the net from the championship game!
