Apply now - Murray Bridge Clinical Skills Day (GP Anaesthetics), 3 September

Students who are studying a Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery (University of Adelaide) or Doctor of Medicine (Flinders University) and are members of AURHA or FURHS, are eligible to apply for RDWA’s Murray Bridge Clinical Skills Day (GP Anaesthetics) to be held Saturday 3 September 2016.

The program offers an up close opportunity to experience rural medicine and the role of a GP proceduralist in a rural community.

Positions to participate in RDWA’s clinical skills days are highly sought after and places are limited. Successful applicants will be offered a fully funded place that includes travel and meals.

GP Local Events for July, August and September

Common problems associated with methamphetamine use seen in rural practice - Yorke Peninsula
Wednesday 27 July 6.30-8.30pm, Maitland Information Centre, 3 Robert Street, Maitland

Dr Chris Holmwood, an addiction medicine specialist, will be hosting a session on methamphetamine use, seen in rural practice. The two hour presentation will provide an update on the skills needed to identify the use of methamphetamine, management approaches, diagnostic dilemmas and referral processes.

Parkinson's Disease Update - Barossa
Thursday 28 July 6.30-9.00pm, Wanera Wine Bar, 65 Murray Street, Angaston

Dr Graham Norton, a specialist in both general medicine and neurology, will be hosting an interactive session on Parkinson’s Disease with video cases. He will be discussing clinical variations in how the disease may present and explaining the new concepts of non-motor manifestations and the concept of ‘precision and personalised’ treatment. There will be time set aside to discuss interesting or difficult cases of Parkinson’s disease in your general practice so come prepared!

Atrial Fibrillation Management: Time for a paradigm shift in our approach - Eyre Peninsula
Thursday 11 August 6.30-8.30pm, Port Lincoln Hotel (Flinders Room), Port Lincoln

Professor Prash Sanders, the Director, Cardiac Electrophysiology and Pacing at the Royal Adelaide Hospital will provide an update on atrial fibrillation (AF) management including the importance of risk factor modification to improve systems and outcomes for patients with AF. Also covered are the best practice protocols in dedicated clinics.

RDWA will cover costs associated with the event, however the dinner cost of $28.00 will need to be paid by attendees on the evening, beverages will also be available for purchase. Register now for Eyre Peninsula August event.


ENT for GPs - Flinders and Far North
Wednesday 24 August 6.00 for 6.30pm start, Standpipe Golf Motor Inn, Port Augusta

Please join us at the Standpipe Hotel for a talk with Dr John-Charles Hodge. Dr Hodge, an ENT surgeon, will be delivering a talk on Ear Nose and Throat for GPs addressing the medical management of ENT conditions as well as explain the removal of nasal foreign bodies and will show how to perform nasal cauterisation for epistaxis.

Dermatology Update - Barossa

Following on from the excellent feedback by attendees at his talk in Port Lincoln, we have invited by Dr Simon Khoury, Consultant Dermatologist FMC and QEH, to present to doctors in the Barossa. This update will assist GPs to improve knowledge on best practice protocols and management plans for common dermatoses, increase knowledge of common dermatoses with atypical presentations and increase awareness of uncommon dermatoses. Assisting Dr Khoury will be Dr Lachlan Warren from Dermatology SA. This will be a great opportunity for you to hear from two speakers and perspectives.

Obesity and Surgery - South East
Friday 16 September 7.00-9.00pm, Penola

Presented by Mr Justin Bessell, this presentation will aim to increase GPs knowledge of evidence-based weight management programs, therapies and multidisciplinary interventions for managing obesity and discuss the recommended approach to weight management in children and adolescents. Mr Bessell will also outline the process for identification of suitable patients for Bariatric management of metabolic disease including how to select patients for Bariatric surgery and describe how to manage patients who present with "Bariatric emergencies” or problems after surgery.

Register now for RESP - Port Augusta 29-30 July | Kadina 9-10 September

The RDWA is pleased to host the upcoming Rural Emergency Skills Program (RESP) workshops in Port Augusta and Kadina. The Port Augusta event is being held Friday evening 29 July and all day Saturday 30 July 2016. For GPs interested in attending the Kadina workshop it is being held on  Friday evening 9 September and all day Saturday 10 September 2016.  Visit RESP for further information on the program and application details.

Apply now for Trauma Management Program for Registrars, 21-23 September

The Trauma Management Program will be held Wednesday 21 to Friday 23 September 2016. Training will take place at the MedSTAR Training Hangar at Adelaide Airport on the Wednesday and Friday, and at the Royal Adelaide Hospital on the Thursday.

The RDWA in partnership with the Royal Adelaide Hospital’s Trauma Service provides a comprehensive program and an opportunity to learn from a skilled team of trauma management specialists about theoretical and practical approaches to early trauma management and pre-hospital care. The program provides a systematic approach to assessing the trauma patient and increasing knowledge of disaster management to assist in local community planning.
