The construction sector doesn’t need a Services Passport

 

At the beginning of July EBC sent a letter to President Jean-Claude Juncker and Commissioner Elżbieta Bieńkowska to reject the proposal of the “Services passport”. EBC joins the position of the other European construction social partners, which are against this proposal.

The vast majority of construction companies operate and will continue to operate mainly at a local/regional level. Moreover, the “Services Passport” may facilitate cross-border frauds and disrupt the effectiveness of controls undertaken by labour inspectorates.

We therefore call on the European Commission to drop this initiative.

The European Pillar of Social Rights – EBC asks for a more inclusive social dialogue


The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) held the second meeting of the Study Group on “the European pillar of social rights” on 6 July. The work of the Study Group will lead to an Opinion by the EESC, to be integrated in the major consultation exercise the Commission will run through the rest of 2016.

EBC contributed to the study group, as its representatives sit in the Employers’ Group. One of the main points raised is that the European Sectoral Social Dialogue should be inclusive and representative in order to work properly.

Boosting growth whilst supporting the social dimension of the EU discussed at the Labour Festival


On 8 July EBC's Secretary General Riccardo Viaggi participated in the plenary Panel Debate, which was organised by ETUC and was part of the three-day Festival "Luci sul Lavoro in Montepulciano (an Italian Festival focused on employment).

Riccardo Viaggi highlighted the added value of a debate around the EU pillar of social rights, the need for revising posting of workers' legislation and the crucial role of productive public investments, among other points.

EBC at the 75th Anniversary of its UK’s member the Federation of Master Builders (FMB)

The FMB celebrated its 75th anniversary at a special reception in the House of Lords on 12 July. The event celebrated the FMB’s proud history, as from 1941 and with a look at the future. EBC President Patrick Liébus and EBC Secretary General Riccardo Viaggi had the pleasure of attending the reception. In the wake of the British vote to leave the European Union, Patrick Liébus reaffirmed the ties and friendship that bind EBC and the FMB.
