RINGING CHANGES AT CHIME

Peterborough's Community Music facility, Chime Creation Centre has had a facelift, or should we say floorlift.  Our Volunteers have taken up the sad old carpet tiles and have
replaced them with a shiny new wooden floor.
It has
certainly helped with the acoustics, the drums and recordings sound HUGE now!

We have also created more space in the building making it even more accessible and have upgraded some of the studio equipment and assistive music technology to help our users get the
most out of their experience at Chime.

Chime is a fully fit-for purpose music workshop, recording studio and rehearsal space. For enquiries or bookings please contact Benny on 07513 360050 or email chime@beatthis.org.

PORTALS FOR MORTALS

It was an eventful summer this year for Beat This, just one of the many projects we got involved in was the Portals For Mortals: Fanfares Project with Digital Artist Jamie Gledhill www.jamiegledhill.tv.
Jamie was one of five artists creating work for Park Tales; a family festival weekend of art,
sculpture, and storytelling which took place during August at Thorpe Meadows.

Jamie creates interactive art that is public, participatory, and playful. His work uses both lo-fi and hi-tech technologies to explore the enhancement of human experience.

For Park Tales, Jamie staged a temporary take-over of ‘Untitled’ by Miles Davies, imagining each doorway of the sculpture as a portal. The result is a playful and celebratory interactive art work in which up to four people at a time are  invited to simply walk through the sculpture.

Jamie enlisted the help of Beat This to record some of the fanfares for the weekend,
the recording sessions took place at Chime with Creative Practitioner, Lee Ashton.

Check out this short film BELOW about the project which includes
some of the sounds and fanfares recorded at Chime.

CAREERS FESTIVAL 2016

In July we were invited by The Skills Service to take part in
the East Of England's largest skills and careers event for young people,
The Careers Festival which took part at the East Of England Showground on July 9th.
We turned up with armed with a plethora of sonic magic-ness, including synthesizers, Launchpads, drum machines, guitars and a laptop studio to capture the sounds that the young people were creating during the day.

We met some fantastic people and had a lot of interest in ours and the Peterborough Regional College music stand across from us, believe me there was a lot of noise coming from our end of the arena! It was great fun!
We had a great deal of interest from young people around what we do and about Community Music in general, we may have even signed up a few for FeedBack Jam sessions.
Hopefully we will be back there net year so keep your ears peeled folks.

Recently our roving Volunteer Reporter, Ellie took the time out to visit the Lavalamp Lighters during rehearsal at Chime.  The guys rehearse each and every Monday and are currently working on their debut album.  Ellie wanted to find out more.....

We have 2 1/2... 'I want to live my life with rock and roll' and 'Can You Hear Our Star?" We have started to record our new songs with Benny at Chime and if we can raise enough money and maybe get some more funding, we can then record our 1st ever album.  Last year we released our 1st EP called the Lavalamp Lighters, it was an amazing fantastic experience for all of us!
... Describe your sound for us!
"Passionate, and heartfelt",
"Loud, crazy and progressibve",
"Exciting, passionate, wonderful and enjoyable!"

The music brings us all together and brings the dream closer and closer.
... if you could jam with any musician in the world who would it be?
"Meatloaf or Chad croger",
"For me i would say either Elvis or Queen",

WORDS IN THE WATER

We were also lucky enough to host a recording and production session with
local artist and poet, Keely Mills aka The Girl From Eye this summer.
We helped Keely to produce a watery soundscape about the Lido and people's experiences of going there.

"This sound scape is part of a poetry residency, called Words in the Water which I produced over the Summer season at Peterborough Lido, whereby I explored the themes of swimming, water and the people that have used or still use the Lido. Keely invited six reseidents of Peterborough and users of the Lido to each write a poem. "

We recorded the poems at Chime Creation Centre and put together an atmospheric soundscape which is now available to listen to online.  It's a really good listen which for us brings up a feeling of pleasant nostalgia and warmth.

"I am rather proud of it and I think its just the beginning. A huge thanks to Benny Turner and Beat This for producing the soundscape. To all the poets who took part Ron Graves Ross Sutherland Charley Genever. To Richard Ferris Sue Bailey and Clare Marshall for performing beautifully and to Peterborough Presents for supporting me and Peterborough Lido for the inspiration."

Have a listen and let us know what you think....

MUSIC, FOOD & FRIENDS

The Community Courtyard Festival took place again on May 28th, organised by Circles Network. There was music, food, games, a community mural being painted, stalls and
even the horses turned up for a jolly!

We were there to support the day with some music, the doors of Chime were open and we had some live music from Thomas Dunleavy and Ellie Morris, plus the DJ's from Club 73 and Lavalamp
spun some tunes for the crowds too.

There were many reports from folk saying how good the atmosphere was and that the day was thoroughly enjoyable. Circles Network managed to raise a whopping £600 for charity, well done guys.

WE'RE BLOGGING THIS!

Yes we have a brand new BLOG on Tumblr folks. Its a place for all of our students and attendees of music workshops to access, upload their inspirations and creations and share
their story's with their family, friends and peers.

Hayden Taylor has been coming to Chime for 1-2-1 music sessions for nearly 3 years now.  The blog is a portal for him to write about his motivations, upload his musical creations and tell his friends about his achievements.  Hayden is on his 3rd album now!
You can follow Haydens blog here - www.tumblr.com/blog/haydentaylorbeatthis
You can download Hayden's debut album too from here - www.haydentaylor.bandcamp.com/releases
