Alumna appointed as Chief Scientist of Cancer Research UK
Professor Karen Vousden CBE (QMC, Microbiology and Genetics, 1978; PhD, 1982), a world-leading cancer scientist, has been appointed Cancer Research UK’s new Chief Scientist. Professor Vousden, who is stepping down as Director of the Cancer Research UK Beatson Institute in Glasgow, is renowned for her significant contribution to the study of a tumour suppressor protein called p53, which has a key role in preventing development of the disease. Congratulations to the Class of 2016!
Our Mile End campus was a hive of activity last week with the summer graduation ceremonies, during which 260 medical and 70 dental students crossed the stage of the Great Hall in the People’s Palace. The new graduates then enjoyed an evening in the splendid setting of the chapel of St Paul’s Cathedral, where the traditional Rites of Passage ceremony was held for the second year in a row. The celebrations concluded with students, staff and qualified family members reciting the Declaration of Geneva (the modern Hippocratic Oath) together. We wish our new graduates the best for their future careers.

‘Naked Scientist’ Dr Chris Smith awarded Honorary degree
Dr Chris Smith (q MBBChir Cambridge/The London, 1995), an award-winning science communicator, received an honorary Doctor of Sciences (DSc) at the summer graduation ceremonies last week. Dr Smith, a consultant virologist at Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge, is founder and leader of the popular radio talk show, The Naked Scientists, which is one of the world’s most downloaded science programmes with well over 40 million downloads so far.

Honour for alumnus Professor Martin Gore CBE
Professor Martin Gore (q Barts, 1974) has been made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for services to Oncology in the 2016 Queen’s Birthday Honours. Professor Gore is a Consultant Medical Oncologist and Medical Director at the Royal Marsden Hospital; his main research areas are the development of novel therapeutics in ovarian cancer, melanoma and renal cell carcinoma, particularly in the area of immunotherapy, gene therapy and targeted agents. William Harvey Research Institute (WHRI) celebrates 30th anniversary
At the end of June, the WHRI hosted a research symposium to celebrate the accomplishments of three decades of translational research at the Institute. Researchers showcased their work, which has played a key role in advancing the understanding and treatment of a range of human disease. The symposium was supported by the William Harvey Research Foundation, which has recently awarded over £200,000 for projects in a range of areas, including heart failure, vascular dementia and osteoarthritis. BATLAA and Barts and The London Annual Fund support The Shield
The Shield, the café operated by the BLSA in Dawson Hall on our Charterhouse Square campus, is undergoing necessary refurbishment to make the space more suitable for student use outside of the café's usual opening hours. BATLAA is providing £10,000 from its General Fund towards the refurbishment alongside £13,020 from the Barts and The London Annual Fund, as well as additional amounts from the School of Medicine and Dentistry and other sources.

Barts 16th Decennial Club
St Bartholomew’s Hospital has a long tradition of Decennial Clubs and the 16th Club consists of those who entered Barts between 1966 and 1975 or qualified between 1971 and 1980. The Club initially had reunions in 1984 and 1986; after a hiatus it was resurrected and held meetings in 1993, 1994, 1995 and 1996. Unfortunately, the meetings arranged for 1997 and 1998 had to be cancelled and there has been no activity since. Dr Jim House (q Barts, 1975) has been treasurer of the 16th since 1993 and he would like to establish if there is any interest in holding further meetings. He kindly requests anyone who is interested, or who is in contact with past students who qualify for the 16th Decennial Club to get in touch.
