#LoveNeverFails - by Monica Vandenberg

So I've reached this interesting point in my marriage. We have suddenly become a couple that friends and family look to for relationship and/or marriage advice. As if we have it all figured out. I'm guessing this is happening because of the number of years that we've been married - today, July 14, is our 10th wedding anniversary!

We don't have it all figured out. We are learning every day. If you want solid marriage advice, I would suggest you ask my Grandma Thelma - she and my Grandpa Bill would have just celebrated their 70th (SEVENTIETH!!!) wedding anniversary, but (Read More)

A Message from your SPRC -

It's July, and we have some news. Drum roll please...

As you know in the United Methodist Church, pastors are assigned to their congregations in July. Well with bated breath, we waited - who would we be assigned?

Well now we know - Trinity/Las Américas will continue to be blessed with the leadership of Pastors Barb Dinnen and Alejandro Alfaro-Santiz! Pastor Alejandro will be with Las Américas 50% of the time, and with Wesley 50%. He will preach at worship on Sundays at 9:00AM at Wesley, and at 10:00AM at Trinity/Las Américas.

Please remind them of how blessed we are for their leadership!
Neighborhood Walk - Friday Nights

Starting this Friday (July 15th), we will have weekly walks around the neighborhood. The group will meet at 6:00pm from the corner of 8th & College (1548 8th St.) and walk for 45 minutes. Please contact Janelle for more information - 515-729-8060, janelle@cfum.org
Save The Date!

On September 24th, the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network will hold a run/walk called PurpleStride at Raccoon River Park in Des Moines. Mary Ellen Barber will be putting together a team in support of Pastor Barb. If you want more information, or would like to participate, please contact
Mary Ellen at 515-681-4720 or at 3m.ebarber@gmail.com.

Update on Trinity's Prison Van Ministry -

Imagine having a loved one that you could never visit because the cost and the travel was too great a burden. Imagine being secluded from your loved ones without the hope of seeing those you love most. Trinity's Prison Van Ministry has helped many people in our community to maintain contact with their loved ones. It is a ministry that folks in the community and folks in Iowa prisons have come to know and respect - and count on! But, sadly, the Prison Van has not made a trip since April. Thanks to Bill & Connie Funk, we now have trips to Oakdale/Anamosa in August, October, and November! These trips to Iowa prisons are very important to the community, to our brothers and sisters in Iowa prisons, and to the countless people who count on the Prison Van Ministry to help them get through this time in their life. Please, if you (or anyone you know) could find the time to become a part of this vital ministry, or if you'd just like more information - contact Monica in the Trinity office at 515-288-4056 or office@trinityumcdm.org. Thank you!
Jazz in July - Volunteers Needed
Trinity/Las Américas will have a booth at Jazz in
July on July 23rd. We need volunteers to help staff the booth, assist in setting up and tearing down, etc. This is a very fun event right here in our community. If you can help, please contact
Pastor Alejandro (515-450-1621) or Steve Dinnen (515-783-8658). More Info
Reminder...

Please be sure to send your announcements for the newsletter to Monica (office@trinityumcdm.org) by noon on Wednesdays, in order for your information to be shared in that week's newsletter.
Also - if you have any announcements for the Trinity/Las Americas family to be put in Sunday's handout, please send those to Monica by noon on Wednesdays as well.
Five Habits to Heal the Heart
of Democracy -
by Parker Palmer

"We the People" called American democracy into being. Today, the future of our democracy is threatened. How can "We the People" call American politics back to health at a time when, in the words of Bill Moyers, "we have fallen under the spell of money, faction, and fear?" One answer is close at hand, within everyone's reach. We must return to the "first home" of democracy, which, as Terry Tempest Williams points out, is found not in a centuries-old document or in a distant city, but in the human heart. Read More

Be Part of the Conversation! Your Voice is Needed!
(Small Group Project)

Trinity/Las Américas is engaged in Small Group circle conversations to get to know one another and look at our future.

How can we encourage each other in our life of faith? How can we name who we are and claim it and go forward as God leads us? These questions don't have a final answer, but will evolve as we listen to each other. And by listening, we will build trusting relationships that will make it possible to move on to our intended future with joy in the midst of the difficulties we face.

Here is our schedule of upcoming circles. If the meeting time for your group does not work, your group leader can help you find one that does. If you haven't been invited, you ARE invited now! It's not too late to start. Call Monica in the church office - 515-288-4056.

Monday, July 18 @ 6:00pm:
 * Cindra & Mary Elle (Circle 5)

Sunday, July 24 after worship:
 * Michael & Carla (Circle 3)

Saying No - by Campbell McGrath,
from The New Yorker (sumbitted by Veronica)

No sir, absolutely not, sorry, but no.
Not sorry, actually - just no.
Keep it simple, plain vanilla: nope.
Not happening. Big en, big oh.

No way, no how.
Negative, nuh-uh, ixnay, nyet.
No no, no no.
No-no-no-no-no-no-no.

Not likely, not likely. Maybe,
but I doubt it.
Possibly, conceivably, in theory.
Uh-huh, mm-hmm...

Well, yeah, sure, OK, why not,
oh definitely, yes,
wow, I mean anything,
anything at all, when can we begin?

Feed the Community & Watch the I-Cubs!

Sermon from July 10, 2016 - by Alejandro Alfaro-Santiz
Very likely this is Jesus' most famous parable. The Gospel seems to reduce it to "anyone can [and should] help anyone." "Be kind to others" seems to be the message. I'll ask you today to look at this parable from a different angle and pay close attention (Read More).
