Past President’s Message

As we end this amazing year with NCHIMA’s board, I would like to thank the members of the Governance team and our Executive board for all of their hard work and dedication over the past year. Thank you for allowing me to serve as your President this year. This year would have been much more difficult without the support, encouragement and understanding of my family, friends and each of you, our members over the past year. Most of all, I want to thank our Executive Director for his guidance, leadership and being the confidant for myself and each of our board members. Many of you heard my speech at the annual meeting and in this last message I wanted to share a little bit of that message.

If you’ve been reading my messages in Footprints over the last year, then you know that each time, I share something from our strategic pillars that we identified last June as the 2015-2016 board took office. The strategic pillars are Leadership, Information Governance/Informatics, Advocacy & Public Good and Innovation.

We are a growing and changing profession and we’ve realized that what has always worked in the past as related to education and offering of CE hours may not be what works in today’s environment. Our association is growing on average of 5% per year since 2012. Our education chair and coding roundtable chair, Angela Buff and Krystal Haynes have worked diligently this year with Ralph and their committees to offer innovative education by increasing our webinar and virtual meetings as well as offering CCS-Prep workshops across the state.  It’s amazing that we have offered over 67 Continuing education credits statewide this year, adding to the region/section total of 124, for a grand total of 191 across the state. That is a 67.5% increase from last year. We know that we have to continue to innovate if we are to remain competitive as an association and profession.

We have also updated the policy and procedure manual and approved two bylaws changes under Lee Ford’s leadership. This year’s incoming board will have new processes to follow, which have been streamlined to lessen the load on our volunteers, so they may focus on leading and planning for the future of our association. We worked with our board and executive director to eliminate tedious tasks and revise the policy and procedure manual for our Executive Board and Governance Team Members. This year’s incoming board will have new guidelines and many changes to adjust to, but we all know that change is a constant and it’s through adapting that we learn and grow as professionals.

This past year, Lisa Walter and her team of reviewers, and our Executive Director, Ralph Morrison worked with the Charlotte School of Law to revise our legal reference manual. They worked with the Charlotte School of Law students and have worked to build relationships around the state. During this review, we found that NC Administrative Code still lists our credentials as Registered Record Administrator and Registered Record Technician, so we will be working with our incoming President, Sharon Easterling and our incoming legal delegate, Tammy Downum along with our contacts in the NC Legislature to revise that language. This month we will launch the online portal from which you can purchase a subscription and download electronically the reference materials that you need.

Kozie Phibbs, Sharon Easterling and I formed the strategic planning subcommittee of the Governance team and we have worked to revise and update the strategic plan so that we can become more innovative in the way that we conduct business.  We also asked our members to complete a workforce survey, which led us to developing focus groups in four areas, so you will see more information from Kris McCall and Pamela Lail in the coming months as they work to further develop the strategic plan focus groups with Sharon and the incoming board.

We also restructured the finance team to provide more financial oversight this year. The new finance team meets quarterly to review the budget year to date figures, balance statements and accounts as well as developing the new fiscal year’s budget. During the first year of my term as President-Elect, NCHIMA and our board found ourselves in an unfortunate situation, but as passionate HIM professionals do, we persevered and here we are! We have accomplished so much this year from redesigning the strategic plan, finance team, policy and procedure manual and updating our legal reference manual, all with you, our members at the forefront of every decision that was made.

Last year, I spoke about our vision for the coming year by partnering with sister associations, such as NCHIMSS, NCHA and NCHICA and we did just that by having a panel discussion on the HOT topics in HIM and HIT at the annual meeting. I also spoke of AHIMA’s theme of my first year of Dream Big, Believe and Leading… It truly is amazing when a few individuals with passion for their chosen profession come together how much you can accomplish and learn from one another by working together, supporting and encouraging each other. Last year, we set a lofty goal of hiring an executive director, whom we now have and is here with us today, thank you Ralph for serving NCHIMA these past 18 months. I am excited about what Sharon and her board will lead our association to by building on what we’ve already begun in the coming year!

NCHIMA Past President

President’s Message

Hello NCHIMA. What an incredible year we had in 2015-2016. Valerie Dobson, Past-President, helped lead NCHIMA leaders through education and implementation of ICD-10; which the industry, surprisingly survived and a successful Annual Meeting at the Grove Park Inn, Asheville, NC. We thank her and the rest of NCHIMA leadership along with you for all our successes. The Annual Meeting included participation of our national organization, AHIMA, speakers on a wide array of topics, a magic show, participation from our Legislative Body, Raleigh, unprecedented vendor participation, and great collaborations between old friends and colleagues. We would like to thank everyone that participated and hope to see you at The 67th NCHIMA Annual Meeting, April 25-28, 2017, Concord, NC - Embassy Suites Charlotte-Concord Golf Resort & Spa.

The NCHIMA Executive Board consists of an exceptional list of volunteers and is excited to begin the 2016-2017 year. Throughout the month of May, the Executive Team worked proactively to continue to refine The NCHIMA Strategic Plan as a cornerstone of the NCHIMA Strategic Pillars to ensure we are meeting the needs of the membership.

The Executive Board and The Governance Team utilize the strategic plan to set long term goals to in turn set short term goals for the year. A key part of the plan is offering education via face-to-face meetings and webinars as utilizing member feedback and the Environmental Scan Survey. Thankfully, many of you responded to the survey sent via email and NCHIMA appreciates your feedback. As part of these initiatives, NCHIMA will be bringing great education to membership related to becoming a better leader, Information Governance, Analytics, Coding and Clinical Documentation Improvement, and partnering with other key organizations and regulatory bodies, and offering scholarship opportunities. Please check the Events Calendar for updates and sessions that may be of interest throughout the year.

Over the past years, NCHIMA leadership has worked aggressively to deliver an organization that works for the betterment of our membership and that plan will continue over the coming year. Thanks to our past and current leadership in building a stronger foundation and helping NCHIMA grow our membership in numbers, commitment, and knowledge.

As mentioned in the annual meeting message, “As HIM professionals we are embarking on a great journey to impact the healthcare environment with our amazing skillset.” Prior to, during, and after the annual meeting, CMS has released details on the proposed Medicare Access & CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2015 (MACRA) that will have tremendous impact on physicians, Part B payment and how we do business, ICD-10 code changes and OCR changes were released, and changes were made to The Joint Commission standards in many HIM areas. As you can see, the journey continues and we will continue to learn and get in front of the curve over the coming year. NCHIMA Delegates, Pamela Lail, Kris Shae McCall, Tammy Downum, Lee Ford, along with myself and the assistance of Ralph Morrison will work diligently to represent North Carolina as outlined with AHIMA. Stay tuned this year for education around these key areas and keep us informed of hot buttons through your region coordinators. Please reach out to me if you feel the need or contact one of the Executive Board Members.

“NCHIMA setting the standard…leading the way…”
