Got a book to promote during Book Week 20016?

Book Week 22 - 28 Oct / Bookshop Day 29 Oct

We have  been communicating with Booksellers and Public Libraries NZ to create opportunities for our members to promote their books during Book Week and on Bookshop Day. We're going to supply them with a list of members with recently published books that are available in bookshops and libraries and they are going to use the list as a reference for authors that they can contact to include in events they are planning. They will use postcodes to find authors in their vicinity. If you would like to be added to that list, here's the form.

Book Week 2016 - participation form

It is solely the choice of the book shop or library and NZSA has no influence in the selections they make. However we are very pleased to be able to create this opportunity for our members.

Book Club Members Released

PEN International reports welcome news. The Angolan Supreme Court has conditionally released writer Domingos da Cruz and 16 activists jailed alongside him in Angola. The group, known as the ‘Luanda Book Club’ were arrested in June 2015 and sentenced to between two to eight year’s imprisonment in March 2016. The charge was ‘preparatory acts of rebellion’ and ‘criminal conspiracy’. More.

Potential Travel Restrictions for Officials Involved with Human Rights Abuses

The U.S. Congress has introduced a bill that has the potential to change the face of freedom of speech issues. PEN America reports that the Azerbaijan Democracy Act (H.R. 4264) would deny U.S. visas for high-level Azerbaijani officials involved in human rights abuses. The bill, if passed, would also cover their immediate family members and individuals with whom they have close financial ties.
It will be a significant step to hold Azerbaijan accountable “for its escalating crackdown on journalists and human rights defenders”, according to PEN American Center.
The bill was introduced by Representative Chris Smith (R-NJ), Smith, who chairs the Helsinki Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe. It was presented during the Commission’s hearing on the persecution of investigative journalist Khadija Ismayilova.
“While brave journalists like Khadija languish behind bars, the officials who put her there should not be allowed to travel freely,” said Karin Deutsch Karlekar, director of Free Expression Programs at PEN. More.

Update on revenue for Creative New Zealand

A further increase in forecast revenue from Lotto NZ profits means that Creative New Zealand expects to receive about $30 million in the 2015/16 financial year from the New Zealand Lottery Grants Board (NZLGB).

This latest forecast is an increase on last month’s update and a $3.7 million increase on the forecast we communicated in March. Our revenue from the NZLGB is now on a par with the forecast we received at the beginning of the financial year.

Forecast revenue from the NZLGB for the 2016/17 financial year remains at $28.67 million. More

That Long, Rocky Road: Why Is Dystopian Fiction Evergreen?

In the Young Adult (YA) section of the store, the shelves are groaning with dystopian novels, the worlds they depict often far worse than reality. Yet during the Cold War when the world lived within three or four minutes of total annihilation, dystopian stories such as John Wyndham’s The Day Of The Triffids (Penguin, 1951) or John Christopher’s The Tripods (Simon & Schuster, series beginning in 1967) didn’t seem to dominate the retail scene in the same way. • Gender: Sixty-six percent of Man Booker laureates are men.
  • Age: The average age of the winning author is 49.
  • Numbers of books published: The average Man Booker winner has published seven titles.

Here's Why E-Book Sales From Major Publishers Are Plummeting

Book publishers are winning in their quixotic war against their own electronic books as sales dropped 11% last year, according to a new report from the industry’s leading trade group.

Electronic books tend to be more profitable for publishers because they cost less to create and distribute, and they aren’t subject to returns from bookstores. But with Amazon dominating the e-book market, publishers have seen reining in e-book sales as a way to curb the online giant’s influence over the market. More
