The Chronicle of Higher Education releases new executive compensation data for Presidents & Chancellors around the nation from 2014-15. Tons of interesting data here. Total Compensation Top 5: Houston's Khator ($1.3M), former Oregon boss Gottfredson ($1.215M), Texas A&M's Young ($1.133M), University of Texas System's McRaven ($1.09M), Georgia State's Becker ($1.051M). Top 5 through the lens of base pay: Ohio State's Drake ($800K), Penn State's Barron ($800K), McRaven ($790K), Clemson's Clements ($775K), Michigan's Schlissel ($772K). Lots, lots more. - link
SB Nation's Missouri site covers the subject of 'wartime/peacetime' ADs & points to former Nebraska boss Osborne & former Michigan Interim AD Hackett as two solid examples of leading departments through tough situations. If it's an Osborne-type Mizzou is looking for, former Tigers hoops stand-out Sundvold could be the answer. Conversely, Interim AD Baker may have a similar approach to Hackett's in Ann Arbor, "He can continue pushing forward the broader parts of whatever agenda Rhoades had begun to lay out. Meanwhile, he has clearly already begun to work on shoring up what was clearly Rhoades' biggest weakness: communication. Rhoades was a black box, and Baker has already given more interviews to local media than Rhoades had in months. Baker can be the best of both worlds because he doesn't have to worry about the long-term. But he's also much, much younger than Hackett; if he does a good enough job in the short-term, he could eventually secure the full-time job." - link
Chicago Tribune's Ryan inks on the LGBT SportSafe Inclusion Program with Northwestern, Oregon & Nebraska first to implement & 20 more have already inquired in the program's first two weeks of execution. Wildcats AD Phillips: "Maybe you have a student-athlete in the LGBT group, but what training do we have as administrators and coaches and support staff? We're supposed to be caring for these student-athletes. That was one area I felt we needed to jump in and where we needed (to be) educated. It's easy to talk about being inclusive and building a safe space but how do you do that? What ways do you make a stronger connection to your student-athlete groups? Nevin has pushed us to be in a position to be a leader nationally in this particular area." Workshops are designed to cover key topics with the goal of changing the narrative around perceptions of being LGBT. - link
Big 12 FB media days start in Dallas & CBSSports.com's Dodd writes on what we can expect: 1) Expectations for Oklahoma to repeat as conference champs, "The biggest upset of the Big 12 season might be if the Sooners don't win the league again; 2) Charlie Strong's security at Texas; 3) The impact of recent developments on Baylor's brand; 4) 15 of the 30 non-conference games played by membership are against 'Power 5' foes, which means we should know early on who still has a shot at the College FB Playoff; and, 5) Expansion talk expected to come to a close with Commish Bowlsby & Oklahoma Prez Boren addressing the media on Tuesday. - link
Denton Record-Chronicle's Vito continues his mini-series on the state of North Texas athletics in light of an AD search. This one is on the Mean Green's FB attendance challenges. Acting AD Dickenson: "We all agree that there are too many people in this town who have not come by and experienced the stadium. The challenge for us as a department is to continue to give it exposure to new people anyway we can." Last year's average attendance of 13,361 was the lowest since 1998. Season ticket sales numbered 3,900 with 1,124 members of the Mean Green Club, the latter figure is the highest since 2011 with the expectation to get to 1,500 this year. Consultant Kuehne: "We have a fan base that is fractured. We have a fan base, alumni base and boosters that need to be brought together." - link
Fast Company's Bellis & Atrium Staffing director Mavi position the importance of different people for each stage of your professional career. Working backwards, for senior people the pair says it's the individuals you've previously managed, "They’re creating innovative companies. They’re people who can offer even more senior people something to learn from. And maybe someday they’re going to be the ones in a hiring position." For those in the middle of their careers, colleagues who've moved on to competitors can be a key source of growth. Three to five years into a career can make good use of a professional recruiter & a former boss. And, entry level pros should look to alumni groups & family connections as drivers. - link
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
Cal officials say 70,000 tickets have been sold for its FB match-up with Hawaii in Sydney, Australia late next month as HC Dykes has been doing due diligence on how to avoid major jet lag for his squad. Stanford HC Shaw: "There are opportunities for other Pac-12 schools possibly. We've heard a lot about how excited they are about this game and if we can help that in some way, shape or form by our conference investing in a game like this, you never know where it could lead." - link

Some of his numbers seem to be rounded up a bit too liberally, but The News-Gazette's Tate reviews upcoming Big Ten media monies for Illinois. Illini boss Whitman has commented on how he'll look to leverage the new cash, "...it’s premature to say exactly what we’ll do...There’ll be discussions on 14 Big Ten campuses about opportunities to support academic missions. There is a willingness and expectation on our part to engage the campus in positive ways to assist the institution. We are fortunate to be part of the Big Ten Conference. These media rights are at the forefront of national conversation, but I can’t comment on the details. It’ll certainly be beneficial." - link
Purdue MBB HC Painter has agreed to an extension that could keep him in West Lafayette through the 2021-22 season once approved next month by the university's Board of Trustees. No word yet on how his compensation may change from the $2.45M base pay he's due this year. Painter is 263-139 with eight NCAA Tourney appearances in 11 season with the Boilermakers. - link
One of the final remaining Baseball HC jobs gets squared away as Liberty AD Barber hires North Carolina AC Jackson to takeover the Flames program. Before spending the last eight seasons with the Tar Heels, Jackson was Pitching Coach for a single campaign at Liberty, which followed stints at UNC Wilmington, Campbell, Barton (DII) & Wofford. - link
Applicable Harvard Business Review entry, "Subscription Business Models Are Great for Some Businesses and Terrbile for Others." We've seen some recent examples in college athletics & Peninsula Strategies consultant Kellman Baxter reviews considerations around such a decision. Points to market/service fit, tracking the right metrics, building a culture of membership, extreme customer engagement & the equal wrong ways to go about planning & execution. - link
Solid little read on the growth of Fanatics & where it's planning to go next as it recently opened a new 50,000 square-foot office in San Mateo, California & carries a valuation of $3.1B. As you might expect, technology & data are at the forefront of the conversation. Launching a new cloud-based website soon to avoid any slow down after championship wins, which will also be optimized for mobile, plus working to "hyperpersonlize" the experience for each individual visitor based on their previous purchase history, geolocation & context of what just happened in the sports world. - link
Inside Higher Ed's New, "You Can Build It. They May Not Come." Wonders why schools continue to look to the addition of FB as a driver of interest, fan & alumni dollars & overall marketing prowess. Reviews the current analysis at Wichita State against previous rebuilds & from-the-ground-up processes at the likes of East Tennessee State & Charlotte, Georgia State & South Alabama. South Carolina sports management professor Nagel: "If you have had a team for 100 years, and you have invested in it before the sport was this expensive, it often makes sense to keep it. But starting one from nothing and hoping to get to the echelon of college football now, it’s probably too late." - link

Interesting from The Ringer on the strategy by Twitter's six ad partners of searching for tweets with specific emoji use & then tailoring ads to the users. But, as you've likely heard and/or experienced, emojis can be misinterpreted or over-the-top graphic. 4C VP of Marketing Dreller: "There’s the old adage that a picture’s worth a thousand words. By adding a certain emoji to your text, you can convey better what you really mean by the text. There definitely is a value on certain things, like a happy face, that is much higher than certain things, like an eggplant." - link

LSU FB HC Miles will not travel to ESPN today after another tragedy in Baton Rouge, "My heart hurts for Baton Rouge and what’s happened in our community over the past couple of weeks...I continue to pray for peace, compassion and civility as our city mourns during this extremely sad time for Baton Rouge...What I'd like to do is have them, our guys, have a platform where they could affect change" Tigers AD Alleva: "We have to learn that violence is not the answer. We have to learn to treat people as you would like to be treated. God bless the fallen officers and their families." (link); LSU Prez Alexander & Southern boss Belton push for peace & inclusivity (link).
Sports Illustrated's Deitsch's latest Media Circus effort includes coverage on if fans could become a greater part of sports TV broadcasts, ESPN's position against Tim Tebow speaking at any political event & thoughts from longtime ESPN college FB personality Heather Cox on her move to NBC that went down last week. Cox: "I can’t say what other people’s departures mean for ESPN and what viewers should read from them, but I can say what mine means. It simply means that this was the perfect opportunity at the perfect time. Every time my contract has come up over the last 22 years at ESPN, it has made sense to talk to other entities. In previous times of doing that, it made sense for me, in terms of my goals and growth, to stay at ESPN." - link
GAME Inc. Founder & Rutgers professor Belzer reviewed the challenges of action & accountability biases in HC hiring, firing & grading in the latest Athletic Director U. piece. Begins & ends the article with a look at four MBB HCs who were merely average through the first three years of their tenures at current or previous stops, each of whom has gone on to become a Hall of Famer. Parker Executive Search's namesake lead in college athletics, "What you don’t want to do is get caught in a cycle of constantly hiring and firing coaches without first figuring out what type of leader your program actually needs. Before you terminate a coach you should know why they weren’t succeeding and then seek to insure that whomever you hire next is equipped to deal with those issues." More. - link
Former editor of The Chronicle of Higher Education Selingo for the Washington Post, "The job nobody can seem to keep: college president." "Just 30 percent of sitting provosts want to become presidents, according to the American Council on Education. And this finding comes just when many presidents are expected to retire. The average age of college presidents is 61 (compared with 56 for the typical corporate CEO). Nearly six in 10 presidents are 61 or older, a proportion that has grown in recent years." Like being an AD, Selingo points to the complexities of leading on institution being much different & harder than a decade ago. Attributes now needed, according to the Arizona State University-Georgetown University Academy for Innovative Higher Education Leadership include risk-taker, visionary, passionate about educational access for students, data driven, and strategic communicator. - link
Around Higher Ed: Tragic news as three Cal Berkeley students passed away as part of the attack in Nice, France. One Eastern Washington student has been accounted for & is safe (link, link); The special panel created to review the University of Missouri held its first meeting (link); New South Carolina State Prez Clark says the insitution needs a culture change with a greater focus on customer service (link); Eastern Illinois will not endure further layoffs as nearly $30M from the state in stopgap funding will help, for now (link); UCF is dealing with the balance of diversity in its student population in comparison to its faculty & leadership ranks (link).
Also noticed: The Omni in Dallas, site of the Big 12 FB media get together, displayed "ENOUGH" in big blue digital letters in response to the latest social unrest around the nation (link); Japan's SoftBank invested $250M in WME-IMG & is reportedly going to shell out a whole bunch more to acquire ARM Holdings, a leading chip manufacturer in the mobile device industry (link); The Economist goes in on cord cutting & the future of TV. Nothing significantly new here, but positions the consumer as clearly the winner thus far (link).

Final 1.Q segment with Marquette Athletic Director, Bill Scholl, whose arrival at MU in 2014 came just months after new President, Michael Lovell, began his own tenure at the institution, so the conversation begins with unique challenges faced by a new AD/Prez pair. I also asked Scholl about the most talented individual athletic staff he's ever witnessed (I bet you can guess his answer) & the one piece of advice floating around the industry that he thinks is a bit misguided.
