Think back over your day - how many times did you have to say "get ready", "tidy up", "please just..."? Melissa Hood, founder of The Parent Practice, says:
 

"Children under the age of six can’t absorb more than one or two pieces of information, so an instruction which says:“Go upstairs, brush your teeth, get into your pyjamas and choose a story. I’ll be up in five minutes to check on you”, is likely to result in you discovering your child 10 minutes later sitting on the stairs, ‘thinking’."

Learning through play: Writing for pre-schoolers

Learning to write is a really important skill for school life and beyond. Young children need to develop some basic skills before they can start using a pencil to write, including hand grip and control.

They don't need to sit down with a pencil and paper to practice though - there are many playful ways this can be learned!
