The development of community and business leaders is vital to the success of our region; that's why the AVCLP Board is passionate about identifying and working with potential leaders.
Since 1998, we've assisted three hundred and forty-five locals to develop their leadership skills. In May, we welcomed twenty-three graduates from our flagship annual program - a ten-month intensive experiential learning program recognised as one of the best in Victoria.
In recognition that not all potential leaders can commit to ten months training and in response to community and business demand, we've developed a range of short courses and skills workshops.
In June, it was pleasing to celebrate the graduation of nineteen participants from our Community Landcare and Agriculture short-course.
Next month, alumni Steven Burke will kick off our monthly skills training. Steven's workshop will focus on how to engage with the media and pitch stories in an informed, targeted way.
We are pleased to be able to provide such a range of leadership training - for those taking their first steps towards a leadership role, through to those accomplished leaders looking to refine their skills and knowledge.

How do you engage with the media? Come along and hear from AVCLP's alumnus, award-winning media man Steven Burke, who'll provide a journalist’s perspective of how community groups can pitch their stories in an informed and targeted way.
Hear about what it’s like to be in a newsroom and learn how to write a media release a journalist will want to read! Steven will share some tips for when you're interviewed and advice about how to build mutually beneficial relationships with the media.

Last month we welcomed another nineteen graduates from the Community Landcare and Agriculture Leadership program. This seven-day initiative is designed specifically for those involved in landcare and natural resource management and covers community leadership, conflict resolution, governance, community capacity & resilience, and trends in the NRM sector.
We delivered this in partnership with North East Catchment Management Authority, Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority, and Goulburn Murray Community Leadership.

The Rural City of Wangaratta has commissioned AVCLP to deliver another 'Strengthening Your Voice' short leadership course in August for residents.
Commencing on Sunday, August 7th and conducted over three Sundays and an after-work hours’ session, this free training provides an opportunity for Wangaratta residents to develop their personal leadership skills and knowledge of governance and government.

We are again partnering with the Australian Institute of Company Directors to deliver the one-and-a-half day Governance Foundations for the Not for Profit Director training.
This course provides a snapshot of the full AICD course for a fraction of the cost and is beneficial for those serving on community boards and Committees of Management, including sporting clubs, recreation reserves, school councils, and community associations. The next program will be in Wangaratta on the 1st and 2nd of December. Applications will open on the 1st of September, but expressions of interest can be lodged with Kim at any time.

Looking for funding? The Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal has teamed up with Our Community to host three one-hour webinars specifically designed to help rural, regional and remote community groups access more funding. The aim of these webinars is to demystify some of the funding options beyond grants and to provide knowledge and tools on how to go about it.

Next month, the best minds in community and stakeholder engagement from across the country will be at the Victorian Regional Leadership Summit.
Join us in Bendigo where we'll discuss how to develop capable leaders able to tackle challenges facing regional Victoria and embrace the diversity and interrelationship of business, community and government.
Our keynote speaker is Nigel Collin, author of The Game of Inches. He is joined by a group of similarly high-profile people including local and well-known social entrepreneur Matt Pfahlert.

Opportunities
Seeking Contractors to work with AVCLP - we are expanding the range of programs we provide and over coming months plan to offer a calendar of events and training opportunities to cater for a broad range of interests and meet the skill development needs of small community group members. If you're a local consultant offering skills-based leadership and/or workplace training, we'd like to talk to you and potentially add you to our talent database. Nominations are now open for this year's Premier's Volunteer Champions Awards, with up to sixty individuals to be recognised at a ceremony in December. Nominations close on 9 August 2016. More here.
The Australia Council for the Arts offers businesses and not-for-profit organisations between $10,000 to $100,000 in funding for arts projects. The program funds a range of activities including the creation of new work, arts-practice based research, creative development, professional skills development, collaborations, touring, festivals, productions, exhibitions and performances. Closes 4 October.

Graduate in profile: Michelle Hudson
|
|
Michelle Hudson completed the annual AVCLP Community Leadership Program in 2014. The skills and networks developed through her participation in the program, together with the exposure to local community leaders, inspired her to turn a vision for a major community event into a reality, as well as establish her own business.
Michelle is the co-founder and chair of the Hume Bank City2City RunWalk. Michelle co-founded the concept, pitched the idea to Albury Wodonga Health and led a volunteer organising committee to implement the event. Participation and fundraising results from the first two years have exceeded all expectations, and the Hume Bank City2City RunWalk has now become a highlight on the annual community event calendar.
AVCLP was also a key impetus to Michelle’s decision to leave a 20-year corporate career as a marketing and communications manager and to step out on her own to establish The Communications Dept., a regionally-based marketing and communications consultancy.
‘I really enjoyed my time with the AVCLP. I found it gave me space to think about where I was career-wise and inspired me to think about ways I could use my skills to support my community in more meaningful ways. I was also fortunate to have embarked on the journey with an amazing group of people, who all encouraged and supported me to follow my dreams. You could say that if it wasn’t for AVCLP, neither the City2City nor The Communications Dept. would be here today.’
