Dates for your diaries: West Hatch High School is holding an open evening for children for entry into Year 7 in 2017 from 6.30pm on Thursday, October 13, and another for students for Year 12 entry in September 2017 on Wednesday, November 9 (from 7pm).

Bike ride success: Five members of staff have completed a 400km cycle ride from West Hatch in Somerset to West Hatch in Chigwell to raise money for a school trip to Borneo.

Charity car wash. A team of students raised about £150 for Pankhurst's chosen charity, Water Aid, with a car washing session. It was charity ambassador Arjun Kuhaendran's fourth event of the year.

Lower School Awards: A host of certificates were presented by Headteacher Frances Howarth at the Lower School Awards evening. Among the awards was the Spirit of West Hatch award presented to Dylan Panesar.

Field trip: Photos from the Year 10 Geography Field Trip to Juniper Hall in Surrey.
Year 11 Prom: There are many ways to end an era but none better than a Prom. With all the exams and induction days out of the way our Year 11s had their final chance to celebrate the completion of their compulsory study at West Hatch. The venue, as in previous years, was Woolston Manor.

SIXTH FORM NEWS
Taster day: Year 10 Sixth Form Taster Day saw students given an insight into Sixth Form life as they tasted sessions from all Sixth Form courses.

* Shreeya Jasraj who has gained a place on the Sutton Trust Summer School  at Imperial College London for Biological Sciences.
* All Year 13 Drama students who performed at Redbridge Drama Centre on June 29.
* Amy Sowerby, Max Delmonte, Gemma Curtiss, Morgan Brown and Oliver Stephens who have all gained places on Higher Apprenticeship programmes.

Redbridge Children’s Book Awards: West Hatch's reading group joined more than 200 enthusiastic readers from schools across Redbridge, Havering and Newham to celebrate the Redbridge Children’s Book Awards at Redbridge Town Hall. Students had spent several months reading the shortlisted books and had voted for their favourite children’s and teenage book published in 2015. West Hatch voted for the two books which were the eventual winners - 'One' by Sarah Crossan (teenage category) and 'Car-jacked' by Ali Sparkes (children’s category).

Jack Petchey Awards: West Hatch winners joined the Epping Forest celebrations for 2016 at the James Hawkey Hall, Woodford. Students were joined by our Leaders Award winner, Ingrid Muscatt, to receive medals and certificates from Epping Forest District Council chairman Jeane Lea.
 
Applauded by family and friends, the winners were reminded of the words of Sir Jack: "Achievement comes in many different forms...be the best that you can be...if someone tells you that you can't do something, get out and prove that you can."
We are especially pleased for Joe Mulvihill Young, our April winner, who was selected to have his story told on the 'inspire and achieve' website.
Headteacher Frances Howarth said: "At West Hatch our motto is: the best that I can be. We congratulate Sir Jack Petchey on his recent Knighthood and thank him for all that he has done for London and Essex schools."
BBC Micro:bit computer initiative: Students at West Hatch High School, Chigwell, are among some one million students taking part in the BBC's Micro:bit initiative.

Farewell Mrs Pavelkova: Alumni returned to West Hatch High School to say 'goodbye' to long-serving Head of Performing Arts Mrs Sue Pavelkova. In a star-studded 'Live Lounge' past and present students along with guests thanked Mrs Pavelkova for the outstanding contribution she had made to school life since joining the West Hatch team.

Congratulations to Megan Hill (who left in 2012) in gaining a First in Masters for Nursing Science from Nottingham University and Abby Heath-Sawyers (2012) for her First in Automotive Engineering from Hertfordshire University after first completing a sandwich degree and a year's placement with Bentley.

​Final concert for Head of Music: Solo items, a performance by the school choir and a selection of pieces by the KS3 and KS5 bands formed the programme at the West Hatch High School summer concert.

Dance success: Congratulations to Jacques Van Praagh who has gained a scholarship to the Classical Ballet Academy, taking one of the two places amongst 650 boys.

SPORTS NEWS
Sports awards: A host of awards recognising sporting success throughout the school were presented at the annual Sports Awards evening.

District athletics: Some 125 West Hatch pupils joined athletes from Davenant, Debden Park, King Harold and Roding Valley schools for the West Essex Schools District Athletics Championships at Lea Valley Athletics Centre, Enfield.

The PE Department would like to thank all the dedicated athletes for their superb contribution on the day and throughout all the training days this term. We will be sure to be back faster and stronger next year and attempt to win our trophy back.

Athletics success: Year 7 student Callum McEvoy has made the West Essex Athletics District squad for the Essex School Championships in July. He will compete in the shot putt after some very impressive throws in recent friendly competitions at Ashton's.
West Hatch Aces basketball scrimmage: This was organised by Jordan Berry. There was a great turnout once again from West Hatch old boys and current students.
A message from Mrs Minister: Former student Jenna Wilkins, whose brother Taylor is in Year 12, has been diagnosed with breast cancer and is receiving chemotherapy treatment to shrink the tumours and fight the cancer. Taylor is organising a charity rugby day to raise money and awareness for young people with cancer. Taylor is inviting anyone from West Hatch to support Team Jenna on Saturday, July 30 (3pm) at Eton Manor Rugby Club, The New Wilderness, Nutter Lane, Wanstead, E11 2JA. The day charity rugby match will be followed by a barbecue and DJ. Tickets cost £10 each. These are available from myself (Mrs Minister) or Taylor.
