Relauch of the Vision Zero

On September 1st, the Government decided on the document Nystart för Nollvisionen (Relauch of the Vision Zero). Along with this, a decision was taken about three government commissions whose purpose is to improve conditions for road safety work in accordance with the relaunch. The focus is on vulnerable road users and new technologies.

SAFER has worked with and given input to the document, and we recently received a thank you letter from the Minister for Infrastructure Anna Johansson.

Interactive graphs visualize fatality rate

Road accidents and their far-reaching consequences on humans and society are of great concern to all actors in the road transport system. Globally the number of fatalities/year grows and is currently in the order of 1.3 million.

SAFER has explored an interesting way to look at the road safety development across the globe. In this example, we can view the 13 countries which constitute the ESV Global Focal Points. The data used are publicly available on-line from several global organisations providing data. The graphs were initially created and presented at the ESV conference 2015.

The below graph is an example that illustrates the decrease in fatality rate since 1990. In this graph we show the traffic deaths per billion kilometres driven together with the number of vehicles registered per thousand inhabitants. The size of the bubbles is representing the population. Since this is based on data publicly available and easy accessible on the web, some countries do not have full coverage for all years in the graph.

Another graph visualises the data in a different way: the decrease in traffic deaths per kilometre driven for each year since 1970. The decreasing trends are evident even in this graph.

Successful workshop on anonymization and feature extraction

SAFER, together with FOT-Net data, organised a second workshop on the FOT data anonymization and feature extraction last week. The workshop was as popular as last year, about 50 people, with a variety of expertise from both local and international participants. Various presenters, including Hannah Rakoff from USDOT, John Lee from Wisconsin, and Jan Erik Solem, CEO of Mapillary in Helsingborg, showed interesting aspects and state-of-the-art for anonymization and feature extraction. During the workshop, active discussions emerged the question; what is actually anonymized enough? The presentations will be available shortly on FOT-Net.eu.

Safe runners in Lindholmen relay 2016

In the evening of September 7th, the 2016 edition of the relay Lindholmenstafetten took place.

It is a tradition that SAFER participates with at least one team, and this year we had 4 brave runners:
Jonas Östh, Lisa Naess, Jóna Marín Ólafsdóttir and Giulio Bianchi Piccinini.

They did a great race!
