The 20 second rule and using clipboards

Those of you who we've had the privilege to meet in our training sessions throughout the last 6 years, may remember these 2 tips. We have recently worked with a group of Fuel Retailers who've been in the industry for decades, and again we see the value of small changes and simple solutions.

Here are two of them:

• 20 second rule
• This rule simply states that anything which is "further away" or "takes longer" than 20 seconds to access is drastically less likely to be done. For example, if you have Health & Safety registers that needs to be completed daily, and they are in a file in the office, they are far less likely to be completed than if they were easily accessible.
• Consider placing these registers at the point where they will be used so they are accessible and there is no excuse for not keeping them up to date. This is where the second tip, clipboards, comes in.
• Clipboards
• This is the best way to make a register, checklist, form, etc more accessible e.g. the production and waste register in the kitchen. It is vitally important to food safety that this register is completed throughout the day, not just at the end of the shift. But if it's in a file it probably won't get filled in as often.
• However, if you place it on a clipboard, hanging on the wall in the kitchen, at the point where production and waste takes place, it's much easier to complete.
