July 2016
Welcome to the Windsor Update.

This e-newsletter is provided by the Corporation of the City of Windsor.  Our hope is to share a selection of stories that Windsorites either need to know, should know, or might just like to know about in our community.

In each issue, we’ll update you about events and schedules, meetings and announcements, and more. We’ll profile plans we’re working on and offer a variety of opportunities to share your own feedback.

The Windsor Update joins our website citywindsor.ca, municipal Facebook page, Twitter account, and YouTube channel as some of the ways we’re engaging with you and communicating the great things happening in our city. We encourage you to create your own direct connection by signing up, “friending,” “following” and “liking” each of these opportunities for engagement.

The Windsor Update will be a monthly publication to start, but with room to grow.

Thanks for your interest in our community, and please feel free to let us know what you think of our newsletter!

Open Streets Windsor

Join us for the largest free recreation program in the city's history!  On July 17, 2016, between 9:00am to 1:00pm a designated route in the City of Windsor will be closed to traffic and open to people of all ages, abilities, social and economic backgrounds to enjoy.

Open Streets are unique events that have been held in over 100 North American cities and involve the temporary closure of roadways to vehicular traffic. The streets become paved parks, allowing people to use them for a host of healthy and fun physical activities like walking, cycling, yoga, dancing and fitness.

The Open Streets Windsor route spans approximately 8 kilometres and will connect business areas and residential neighbourhoods on Sandwich Street, University Avenue, Aylmer Avenue, Wyandotte Street East and Drouillard Road.

Swing into Summer Safety with the Blue Jays

Windsor Fire and Rescue Services and The Safety Village of Windsor and Essex County have teamed up with The Toronto Blue Jays Baseball Team and the Fire Marshal’s Public Fire Safety Council for our “Swing into Summer” Safety Campaign.  This campaign is aimed at improving public safety in Ontario by educating and raising awareness with school-age children and their families about fire safety and other injury prevention tips over the summer.

Windsor Fire and Rescue Services plans to increase public awareness of the “Swing into Summer” Safety Campaign through open houses held at The Safety Village, 7911 Forest Glade Drive every Wednesday from July 6 to August 17 from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm and 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Working together we can reduce fire and injury losses and save lives.  We invite you to step up to the plate and hit a home run for your family and community by participating.  Come and visit The Safety Village of Windsor and Essex County, meet the firefighters and Sparky, and get your free baseball cards!

For more information contact the WFRS Public Education Division at 519-253-6573 or The Safety Village at 519-945-5500.

Steamer ship seen from Boblo Island, circa 1916.

In 1898 the Detroit, Belle Isle and Windsor Ferry Company purchased Boblo Island (Boblo being an English corruption of Island’s French name, Bois Blanc) and spent a great deal of money to develop the site as an excursion resort. The first entertainment was in the form of picnic areas, beaches, sports fields and a carousel.  In 1913 a dance pavilion was added.  It grew into an amusement park which operated until 1993.  Photo courtesy of Bill Marentette.

The City of Windsor conducts surveys as a means of soliciting ideas and opinions from residents so we can better serve the community as a whole.  Check back often to see if a new survey is ready for your input.
