Dear Friend

I am very pleased to announce that after 16 years, the Asha Health Clinic established by Child Welfare Scheme Nepal and Kidasha (then CWS) has been handed over to the government in a ceremony attended by Nepal Deputy Prime Minister Kamal Thapa. The renamed Asha City Clinic will now operate as a primary health centre managed by Pokhara Sub-Metropolitan City with the support of the District Public Health Office.

Over the years, some of the poorest families and children in Nepal have used Asha Services more than 650,000 times for treatment, care and advice. An even greater number have benefited from local services initially developed by Asha and many communities have been strengthened by Asha outreach and community capacity building. We are extremely proud to have started a project that now adds strength to government healthcare provision in Nepal and will continue to do so for many years to come without a dependence on international aid.

Over the next few months, we will continue to keep a watchful eye on how things progress and if necessary will provide additional advice and training to ensure the high quality of service provision that is the norm for Asha is maintained under the new leadership. Furthermore, the government plans to use the Asha City Clinic as a role model to increase the quality of care at the other four urban clinics in the Pokhara Municipality.

I want to say a big thank you to everyone who has enabled Kidasha (CWS) to support and grow Asha Healthcare over this period.  Learning from our work with Asha, coupled with that from our other  projects in Pokhara, means we now have an in-depth understanding of the issues facing families living in chronic urban poverty, as well as the best ways to help address them.

So, as the door gradually closes on one of our longest running projects, we are utilising the learning from Asha to develop new projects that meet the needs of the poorest children and families living in urban chronic poverty in today’s Nepal, with a particular emphasis on the sexual and reproductive health of adolescents outside family care and improving parental awareness of good nutrition and sanitation. I look forward to sharing more details on these projects with you soon.

Best wishes
