Meet Betty Wooten:
This last year has brought a lot of changes to my life so my new motto is…”You never know how strong you are until being strong is the only choice you have.”

I was born and raised in Mitchell, SD and attended Dakota Wesleyan University and graduated in 1977 where I received 4 majors in Art, Psychology, Elementary & Secondary Education. I still had time for fun and was Homecoming Queen in October 1976.

My favorite things in life are animals, art & antiques… I love vintage shops. The main man in my life right now is my kitty named BO.

I have always been creative and currently have my first sculpture bronzed and a few more in clay right now. Mom & I created the Dakota Kid’s Coloring & Activity Books in the mid 1980’s so I was able to illustrate and co-author those with her.

One of new goals is to spend more time on my art in my spare time. I am currently working on landscaping at my new house and creating a Secret Garden on one side. I have always believed you can always accomplish many things but you have to try first before you give up and say you can’t do that.

Sales is my current position at Stec’s Advertising Specialties for almost ten years. My customers have become my friends through these many years and I love finding the perfect promotional items for them.

Making people laugh is one of my favorite things so I hope I always have a funny story to tell you…
Reminders from last month
Bring your items!
Don't forget to bring your professional women's clothing to help women struggling to afford appropriate interview attire to this week's meeting. These items will be donated to the Career Learning Center & SD Job Service for women who are in need of these items.

Also, as a reminder, the Women's Network is seeking promotional items that can be included in baskets to be donated at various local events and conferences. These door prizes will help to promote the Women's Network as well as YOUR business. You may bring those to the July meeting or future meetings, as this will be an ongoing project.

Important Information on
Sales Tax Changes
July marks the middle of summer for most of us. If you are like me you are looking forward to this month because most kid’s activities are done for the summer and now you just get to enjoy the next couple of months this time of year. I love the summer, it is my favorite season. I love the hot weather because the hotter it is, the more times I get to go swimming. This year seems to be promising a hot one and oh how I love to swim.

Well enough about my love affair with summer and back to work, now if I could just take the summers off! Oops, there I go again. Anyway, if you are a business owner or work in a business that collects sales tax than you should be into the swing of things with the new sales tax rates.

June marks the first month for withholding at the higher rate. What this means for cash basis businesses is that all your sales tax collected should have been at 6.5% within Rapid City limits and 4.5% outside city limits. If you have a business that sent out invoices in May but knew you would not receive payment until June, the invoice should have used the new sales tax rate. If by some chance some bills were sent out at the lower rate, than the business will have to pick up any additional tax due on those invoices. Hopefully you were all planning ahead and made the change in time to avoid or almost avoid picking up the tab for the sales tax increase.

If you only pay your sales tax twice or even once a year, then your report would/should have two different sales tax rates to report as nobody should have paid the tax before it actually changed. I just wanted to remind everyone of the rate change in case they forgot or were wondering what their reports would look like in the coming month.
