SELECTED O'NEILL INSTITUTE UPDATES



On July 18-22, Executive Director Oscar A. Cabrera lectured at the Summer Academy in Global Food Law and Policy in Bilbao, Spain. The O'Neill Institute is one of the institutional partners of this one-week program organized by Alberto Alemanno. The program convenes practitioners, policymakers, industry professionals, and academics to gain fresh insight in food law and policy.

On July 18-22, Jeffrey Crowley, Sean Bland, and Sonia Canzater attended the 21st International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2016) in Durban, South Africa. The conference brought together physicians, scientists, policy researchers, and community activists working at the front lines of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Pre-conference sessions included meetings on transgender women and HIV/AIDS, HIV/Viral Hepatitis Co-Infection, and MSM & HIV.

On July 7-8, O'Neill Institute Associate Sarah Roache attended the University of Liverpool's conference on Ending Childhood Obesity: A Challenge at the Crossroads of International Trade and Human Rights Law. Sarah presented on International Human Rights and Childhood Obesity Prevention and Building Legal Capacity to End Childhood Obesity.
 
On June 29, Faculty Director Lawrence Gostin attended the Cancer Moonshot Summit in Washington D.C., chaired by Vice President Joe Biden. Researchers, doctors, patients, and philanthropists met with the goal of doubling progress in cancer prevention over the next five years.
 

On June 23-24, the institute partnered with The Union and Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids for the Eighth Lawyers Workshop on Law and Tobacco Control in Latin America. 

On June 22, Sean Bland contributed to a webinar hosted by the HIV Prevention Justice Alliance and the LGBT/HIV Criminal Justice Working Group by discussing how policing of gender and sexuality pervades law enforcement, the operation of courts and the penal system, especially the policing of people living with HIV in the United States. 

On June 20-21, the institute hosted a consultation with the UN Special Rapporteur on the right to health, Dr. Dainius Puras, on his upcoming report to the United Nations on the Sustainable Development Goals. The participants included academics and activists who offered rich feedback on a draft of the report.

In June, former O'Neill Institute fellow Rebecca Haffajee joined the Health Management and Policy faculty at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. Congratulations, Rebecca!
