REES is pleased to announce the success of one new grant awarded between Jan – June 2016
 
Debra Davidson has been awarded a grant from The Community Centre for Disaster Research
(Mount Royal University) for a project entitled “Hydraulic Fracturing: Social Responses and
Community Outcomes”. The objective is to explore the social impacts of and responses to hydraulic
fracturing for oil and gas in Alberta.

Presentation

Debra Davidson gave a presentation at the World Forum of Sociology, International Sociological Association in Vienna (July 10th - 14th, 2016) entitled "What the Frack?! Observations on the rapid development of, and growing resistance to, hydraulic fracturing."

Professor Peter Boxall is now president elect of the Canadian Agricultural Economics Association (CAES).

Lucas Novak won third overall in the Western Agricultural Economics Association’s Graduate student paper competition.

Annual Farm Tour
Thursday, July 28th
Join us as we visit Kingman, AB to visit a number of crop and livestock operations and meet local producers. Please bring a bagged lunch and dress for the weather, as this event will proceed rain or shine. Transportation and dinner will be provided. 
 
3 Minute Thesis competition & "whine" and cheese reception
Wednesday, Sept. 7th
Watch our second year MSc students compete for first place as they summarize their research topics in 3 minutes or less. Join us afterwards at the Faculty Club for an awards presentation and refreshments. More details to follow soon.

Dr. Mohammed Torshizi is joining the Department as a term Assistant Professor / Lecturer in Agribusiness & Agricultural Economics. 

Dr. Bruno Wichmann and his wife Valentina welcomed their first child, Daniel,
on July 4th at 9:17am.


Lucia Secchia, our Research and Academic Programs Manager, returned from maternity leave on June 27th.
REES Administration
Renovations in the general office are now complete. We have added an HDMI / touch screen, new projector, podium and powered screen to our meeting rooms. To protect the new equipment, 515D is now locked.

We've added a new meeting room in the lab, GSB 519A, which is available for bookings.

Alfred Appiah (MSc) is the first student in our department to advance to the campus-wide 3 Minute Thesis finals, where he competed on April 13th.

Appiah’s thesis focuses on ensuring future water reliability in Alberta. He uses the case study of Denver, CO, where the municipal water supply was at risk due to deforestation. Read more...

On April 19th, senior undergraduate students from the Faculty of Agricultural, Life and Environmental Sciences (ALES) presented their capstone research projects.

Three groups from AREC 410 (advanced methods in applied economics) delivered 15 minute oral presentations based on their analysis of data from real-world organizations. Read more...

On May 24th - 27th, the "Tracking Change" research project, led by Dr. Brenda Parlee, hosted their first Youth Knowlege Fair in Edmonton.

The event gathered youth from across Western Canada to share ideas, knowledge and develop skills for ensuring the health of the environment and the people of the Mackenzie River Basin.
