Bishop Ough: Statement on Philando Castile shooting
Once again, the Minneapolis-St. Paul community and our nation are deeply wounded. The Wednesday evening officer-involved shooting of Philando Castile has overwhelmed us with anger, grief, frustration, and despair. It has left our hearts and voices crying for justice. The preliminary evidence and the shocking video images are a convincing reminder that we have work to do.
We pray for the family and friends of Philando as they grieve his loss. We pray for a community that’s hurt and polarized. We pray for the officers involved in the shooting. We pray for an end to violence and racial disparities in our entire criminal justice system. And we pray for a day when every person will be treated with dignity and respect. The death of any one of God’s children is the responsibility of all of God’s children.
I invite all persons and communities of faith to use this tragedy as an opportunity to redouble our efforts to work for justice, stamp out institutional racism, and affirm the value of all human life. Let us together pray that God will work through us to bear witness to Christ’s call to reconciliation and justice, and to bring healing to a fractured community and a broken world. As we pray for peace, let it begin with us.

During June and July our Sunday morning worship theme is “Blessings from the Cabin.” Each week we’re looking at gifts we receive by stepping off our usual paths and doing things a little differently for a time. Call it a vacation, a stay-cation, or summer rhythm, we have many stories of Jesus stepping OUT of the crowd from time to time, so we have good precedent.
The message during worship is not so much a sermon these days as a sharing: of ideas, questions and experiences. It encourages us in challenging times and comforts us with reminders of joy shared. So, in keeping with that kind of sharing, we asked you to share some photos of your time “out and about” this summer. Photos of where you love to be... your garden, the lake, around a campfire; wherever your getaway time is spent.

An update on the Council of the Sky
All in the Circle: Creative Arts & Nature Camp is coming up just around the corner! The team behind this whole camp, which includes members of PPUMC and Minnesota Interfaith Power & Light (MNIPL) are currently in the process of hammering down the details for the camp in August. This includes gathering craft supplies, filling the rest of the adult leadership positions, training the youth counselors and other staff, and more! According to Cathy Velasquez Eberhart, a member of PPUMC and the MNIPL Board, while registrations are strong, there are still a few spots open that we would love to fill. If someone has expressed interest in the camp, please let them know there is still time to enroll. We also still want to make sure there are scholarships for everyone that needs them, so if you have been thinking of making a donation and haven't yet, please do so now. All in all, the camp is well on its way to being an exciting reality.
There will be a celebration on the last Friday of the camp (August 12) that all are welcome to join to see what was accomplished during the two weeks of camp.

Last month PPUMC had the pleasure of hosting Cantabile Chamber Chorale as they embarked on their tour in Minnesota. Not only did we host their concert on June 30, but they sang with us during our worship service the Sunday before their concert! Thank you to Cantabile for their lovely gift of music, and to Don Singley for his efforts in organizing this opportunity. Below is a message from Don about Cantabile's visit:
"How to capture the joy of last week? Three beautiful concerts, a host of new friendships, future opportunities galore –wonderful! Both the church service at PPUMC (attended by seven Cantabile members, who joined us in song) and the concert at PPUMC (the middle one of the three) had an added zest because my “home” church showed its spirit in so many ways – from the impassioned rendition of “Love Grows Here” at the Sunday service, to the beautiful acoustics of our remodeled sanctuary carrying the voices of Cantabile to a large and appreciative audience, to the great reception afterwards – not to mention the support shown by Chris, Dave, Anna, Joy, and all the members of the congregation. Erik Peregrine, the conductor of Woodbury Chorus and Orchestra (WCO), who conducted several pieces at the PPUMC concert, and I are both eager to have several follow-on musical events utilizing the talents of both PPUMC and WCO. Hundreds of thousands joined in solidarity for equality at the 45th annual Twin Cities Pride Festival in Loring Park in Minneapolis. Prospect Park UMC was once again front and center at the Minnesota UMC Reconciling Congregations (MRC) booth. The MRC handed out thousands of rainbow peace medallions to enthusiastic attendees at the festival. Prospect Park UMC is a proud member of the MRC.
