Waitsfield Elementary School Rocks!

October 8, 2015
This year's Waitsfield 5th/6th grade spelling team did an excellent job at the WWSU team competition, taking on challenging words like "quantitative", "ascended", and "courteous".  Three teams, including Waitsfield's, were within just 6 points of each other (which equates to just two words out of hundreds spelled) at the end! Congratulations to Warren School's team, which will go on to represent our supervisory union in a regional bee this weekend.

Dear Families and Friends,

Thank you for your support of the Annual WES PTA Ski & Skate Sale.   We count on 100% participation from our school community to make this a successful event.  There are many ways to get involved, so if childcare or other obstacles are an issue for you let us know and we can suggest other ways you can help out.  This is the only fundraiser the WES PTA will do for the year, so please pitch in. The success of this event helps to fund many essential programs and projects in our school, from our winter ski/board program, to artist residencies, to playground improvements and much, much, more. Everyone involved thanks you for your support and the children in our school appreciate it too!

HELP US FIND OUR STUDENTS!
The Waitsfield Elementary School Board is beginning work on the 2016-2017 school budget. To help us to plan appropriately, it is important that we have a fairly good sense of our projected enrollment.  If you have, or know of, children under age 5 who live in Waitsfield, please call the school at 496-3643 and speak with Kaiya or Kathi OR, if you prefer, please encourage the families to contact us at their earliest convenience (but soon, please -- our first budget draft is due in just a a month).   Thank you!!!

2 Hour Delay now part of the WWSU School Closure, Postponement Process

Dear WWSU Families,
It is hard to believe that while we are enjoying this unusually glorious foliage season, our winter weather is right around the corner.  Before we know it, the snow will start to fall, and with all of its majestic beauty comes unpredictable weather!  As you know, from time to time it becomes necessary to delay the start of a school day or close school altogether.  Sometimes, reasons other than snow, such as power outages or freezing rain and sleet that arrive at precisely the wrong time can alter the schedule of the day.  Of course, safety is always my top priority when making these decisions.  The WWSU spans approximately 42 miles from Warren to Waterbury, and oftentimes the conditions can be quite different from one end to the other.  My years of experience tell me that decisions to close school are often met with dissatisfaction, and I am hoping to do what I can to implement the best possible procedures in our supervisory union.  However, we all know that our Vermont weather can be very unpredictable and often changes drastically in a short period of time.
I would like to take this opportunity to share with our families how these decisions are made.  In order to officially count a day for state purposes, certain criteria must be met.  Transportation costs also factor into the decision.  We try to avoid paying for an additional day of transportation which can be very expensive, and happens if elementary schools are open when the high school is closed and vice versa.  I must also give some consideration to whether or not the faculty at large will be able to arrive safely and if we will adequately be able to staff the school for the day.  These are some examples of why if any three elementary schools need to delay or close, the entire supervisory union does the same.  Also, if the high school needs to delay or close, then the entire supervisory union does as well.  We need to have approximately 50% of our high school students attending to count the day, to maintain the regional calendar (including Barre Technical Center), to maintain adequate classroom instruction, and to be responsible with our busing costs and contracts.
I rely heavily on management at the Bus Barn when it comes to evaluating the weather conditions.  We have our cell phones set up for alert text messages.  If an alert comes in, Danny at the Bus Barn begins gathering information from the National Weather Service.  If the storm has already arrived, he checks with all of the town crews for their feedback on their road conditions.  Danny regularly monitors the following sources for forecasts and predictions:  The Weather Channel, WCAX, WPTZ, NOAA, Weather Underground, VT Agency of Transportation 511 website, Agweb, Unisys Weather, Intellicast, CRWS, and last but not least … a stand outdoors!  Danny calls me, reports the information, and together we decide between 4 and 5:30 a.m. how we will call the day.  I try to begin my calls by 5:20 a.m.  Laura Titus, my administrative assistant, calls the television and radio stations and sends out the Blackboard Connect messages.
We need to call a delayed opening when a storm hits at a time such that the road crews cannot get their jobs done and the roads simply are not ready for buses to travel on them on time. Please note that the WWSU administrative team voted unanimously to move our school delayed starts from 90 minutes to 120 minutes, or the full 2 hour delay, like the majority of Vermont schools, beginning this fall 2015.  Please plan accordingly. Delayed starts can be confusing for folks because often when you go out, the main roads will seem fine.  Please remember that back roads can vary quite a bit.
The temperature can sometimes cause a delay.  Freezing rain will cause both delays and closings more often than snowfall.  If temperatures dip to -25 degrees with the wind chill factor, we will delay if warranted and even close if the predictions should indicate because of the risk of frostbite while waiting at a bus stop.  Luckily, we do not see many arctic Vermont days!
Your building principal should have sent home detailed information explaining the best ways for you to receive information about school closings and delays as soon as it becomes available.  WWSU uses a messaging and communication system called Blackboard Connect, which seems to work well for everyone.
I would sincerely like to thank all of our WWSU families in advance for your patience and understanding in dealing with delayed openings and/or closed school days.  I realize how frustrating it can be if conditions seem fine at your house or on your roads when I call a delay or closing.  These decisions are made with all the best available information possible, in a very short period of time, and taking into account the entire WWSU community.  I will do my very best to keep school open whenever I can, while maintaining the safety and security of or greatest resource, our children.
Sincerely,      Brigid S. Nease,  Superintendent of Schools

Spring Soccer
MRVSA will be holding skills assessment for those that wish to play soccer in the Spring of 2016 on Sunday October 18th at Mad River Park. This assessment will be run by Don Haddox (HUHS soccer coach) and current fall coaches. Times as follows:
U10 Girls (Grades 3 and 4) 10:00-11:00am
U12 Girls (Grades 5 and 6) 11:00-12:00pm
U10 Boys (Grades 3 and 4) 12:00-1:00pm
U12 Boys (Grades 5 and 6) 1:00-2:00pm

If you have a player who wishes to be placed on a team for the spring season, please email us at registrar.mrvsa@gmail.com with your child’s name, town and grade indicating whether or not your child will be able to attend the skills assessment.  For those who are unable to attend the assessment it is still important for you to indicate your child’s interest in playing in the spring now so we know to place them on a team. Attending the skills assessment is not a commitment to play; once we have teams created (by the end of October), you will then be sent an email with further information and the opportunity to register your child to play or decline at that time. Players should bring a #4 ball and a water bottle. Shin guards required.PLEASE NOTE: There will be soccer in the spring for younger groups (Pre-K, Kindergarten, Grades 1 and 2), but there will not be skills assessment for these ages. Information on the registration of these age groups will be distributed in March of 2016.

Basketball
The Mad River Youth Basketball League is looking for coaches for the upcoming season beginning in December. We usually have multiple coaches on each team so the work load can be shared.  Teams usually have once game a week and two practices.  We also provide a training session for all coaches. In addition, we are looking for someone to help us design a basic website. We have money to pay for the work. For more information contact Jerry Cassels at 496-7188 or visit mrybbvt@gmail.com

Building Project at Harwood Union

We are seeking community participation!

Last April, the Harwood Union School Board of Directors selected the architectural firm, Truexcullins, to implement a building study of Harwood Union MS/HS. The initial reasoning was to understand the condition and status of our building and the challenge of upgrading our facility to a 21st century learning environment for our students and staff. While our facility has received much tender loving care over the years, there are some specific needs that must be addressed,  as well as creating a 21st century learning environment for the future.

We are presently in the process of determining the priorities and the financial costs in moving a building project forward to the taxpayers for a vote in November 2016.   Harwood Union has also formed an educational planning committee with representation from both staff and students with the task of providing insight and recommendations into the needs of a 21st century learning environment for the future. At this point in the process, we need to share our information and understandings with our community members. While there will be many opportunities in the near future to hear and understand the reasoning behind the “why” of this building project and the specific details related to the recommended improvements, the facilities committee will be offering the first opportunities to get involved and understand our building needs by hosting three community tours of the building. The building tours will be offered on the following dates and times: October 15th @ 6:30 p.m., Saturday, October 17th @10:00 a.m. and Tuesday, October 20th @6:30 p.m. On November 12th at 6:00 p.m. representatives of our architectural firm, Truexcullins, will facilitate a Community Forum.

We welcome and need your participation! Please get involved!

Please save the dates and plan to attend a building tour and the Community Forum!
