Ask the Doctor
"What’s itching you?"

Itch is defined as “an irritation in the skin that elicits an urge to scratch”. Itching is a very common problem that everyone experiences and can be localized (limited to one area of the body) or generalized (occurring all over the body). The medical term for itching is pruritus. Pruritus has many different causes and can be associated with skin abnormalities or can occur on normal skin. If you have an itchy skin rash or itchy skin lesions, you should see your dermatologist, as this typically means you have a skin condition that requires treatment (i.e. hives, eczema, psoriasis, infestations, etc).

The most common cause of itch without skin abnormality is dry skin, also known as xerosis in medical lingo. Xerosis is common during months in which there is cooler weather, when humidity in our houses is low because of indoor heating. Treatment with a moisturizing cream (not lotion) immediately after showering is often helpful. Avoiding strong soaps and detergents, or even avoiding soaps altogether is important for those with itchy dry skin.

Patient Story
"I am really glad I started to come to your office. I like Dr. Jagwani a lot and feel that she spends enough time to take care of all my miscellaneous questions. I also really appreciated that when I could not get an appointment during an outbreak of a problem, a PA called me to discuss it and got me started on an antibiotic right away. I plan on using your clinic for all my derm needs in the future, and will refer my friends as well. Thanks again."

The Scary vs. the Skinny: Botox
Botox has a long history as one of the most effective treatments for stopping wrinkles in their tracks, and today, it’s still one of the best anti-aging tools available. But, as with any treatment, making a decision about whether or not it’s right for you can be a challenge. This month, we’re looking at some of the factors most patients consider when it comes to Botox.

The Scary: Will people I know be able to tell I’ve had Botox?
The Skinny: No, but they’ll notice younger-looking skin.

Much like internet dating, which was once for only the bold-hearted, Botox has moved into the mainstream. Thanks to huge advances in technology, injection technique and the use of the substance itself, Botox can yield extremely subtle results, and no longer requires the kind of commitment or risk it once did. Most patients report that their face doesn’t look obviously different, just more refreshed.

Countdown to Photo-Ready Holiday Skin
Looking your best at the busiest time of the year takes some planning. Stress takes a toll – in the form of tired, dull-looking skin – as the year winds to a close. Now is the time to get ahead and plan a few essential steps that will give you photo-ready skin come December. Below, NDDA’s week-by-week guide to getting the glow . . .

12 Weeks:
Microdermabrasion/glycolic peel

Beautiful looking skin starts deep. To get the best texture and tone, start with a microdermabrasion to get good exfoliation and prepare the skin well before doing any other skin care treatments.

10 Weeks:
Micro-needling

A series of micro-needling treatments stimulates collagen production and reduces pore size. It can even minimize any old acne scars or other skin depressions, leaving skin smooth and ready for perfect holiday makeup!

8 Weeks: Fotofacial
This treatment helps fade redness, summer damaged skin, sun spots/freckles and brightens the skin.

“Sunscreen that Doesn’t Feel Like Sunscreen”

Get 15% off our newest
product line:
TiZO Sunscreens
You may have heard the buzz about TiZO – a new, daily-wear, mineral sunscreen line that’s getting a lot of attention from celebrities and dermatologists these days. Hollywood it girl Kylie Jenner called it her “go-to” product in a recent New York Times article, and professional makeup bloggers list it as a must-have for “sunscreen that doesn’t feel like sunscreen.”

Here at North Dallas Dermatology, it’s a favorite for all skin types especially for photosensitive and post-procedure skin. The mineralized, zinc oxide base is a state-of-the-art technology in a physical block sunscreen, packing full broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection into a sheer, water resistant formula that feels almost weightless on skin.

TiZO sunscreens are the top choice for NDDA’s Dr. Kim. “TiZO is an exceptional sunscreen. It contains only physical blockers (no chemicals) so it can be used on even the most sensitive skin,” she said, adding that most over-the-counter sunscreens don’t shield against all UVA rays. “It feels super light and sheer, and even helps absorb shine, but what really sets it apart is that it is the only sheer sunscreen that can be re-applied over makeup to protect your skin throughout the day.”

Of course, any sunscreen that does double duty as a makeup refresher and primer is worth a second look. TiZO layers invisibly under makeup and refines skin when it’s worn alone – making it a good choice for anyone trying to avoid the dreaded white residue left by most other physical sunscreens.
