HARCA HELPERS

A Volunteer Newsletter

OCTOBER 2015

A very happy Autumn to all of you (literally seasons greetings!)

I hope you're all making the most of our sporadic sunny days to dry off from the drenching on all the other days. It's important to us that this newsletter is useful and interesting to all our volunteers so please take five minutes to complete our survey at the bottom of this newsletter, entrants will be automatically entered into a prize draw. We are also pleased to introduce two very special volunteers, Valerie, a volunteering veteran who helps out at the Aberfeldy Centre and a special project from Gustavo who needs our support! Read on for more information...

Volunteer Projects
Over in Spotlight we are lucky to have on board the very talented Gustavo Arguello, he volunteers with A Space to Make Digital, inspiring creativity in young people.
Gustavo is a graphic and product designer and he needs our support. He recently launched a new project called GustaVino, a versatile Gaudi inspired modular wine rack. Made from renewable materials the product is even 3D printed!

He needs our help to spread the word and increase the number of people willing to part with a few pounds to support this exciting project.

Valerie Plumpton: Volunteer at the Aberfeldy Centre

When did you start volunteering and what do you do?

I first volunteered for Poplar HARCA well over 10 years ago, I remember helping out with the Food Cooperative at St Pauls Way and things snowballed from there. I now volunteer at the Aberfeldy Centre cafe and over in Burcham Street helping to set up the fitness classes and providing I.T support for beginners.

What keeps you coming back?

I like to keep busy and volunteering gets me out of the house, it also helps to keep my brain sharp!

What can we find you doing when you're not at the Aberfeldy Centre?

More volunteering! I first started 14 years ago at the Celia Hammond Animal Trust and I'm still volunteering there today. I also spend time at St Matthias Community Centre volunteering with the homeless, cooking them dinner and chatting with them. On my days off I like to catch up at home but often end up baking cakes for charity coffee mornings and raffles, I'm currently studying cake decorating at college.

Can you give us three words that sum you up?

The arrival of photography in London in 1839 changed the way people saw their city, This exhibition delves into collections from 1839 to present and provide some of most striking images of London and Londoners from the era; from the first known photograph of the capital to the opening of Blackwall Tunnel, the first Tube line and life on the city’s streets.
