About Your Dental Care

 

"Since I don't have any cavities, then theres no way I could have gum disease."
 
 
MYTH: Gum disease is usually painless, but can be indicated by early signs of the disease (gingivitis) like redness, swelling or tenderness of the gums.

Early Prevention through regular cleanings and careful brushing and flossing can keep gum disease at bay. 

 

MYTH: Dentists agree - you should replace your toothbrush every 3 months to prevent fungus and bacteria growth.

"There are other ways  I can develop gum disease other than having poor oral hygiene."

 

TRUE: Forgoing good oral hygiene can certainly contribute to the progression of gum disease, but there are a variety of other factors that can also impact your risk. For instance, tobacco use has been shown to greatly increase your chance of developing gum disease. Stress, poor diet, and even genetics, can also play a role in the health of your gums.
Dentists agree that you should replace your toothbrush every 3 months to prevent fungus and bacteria growth.

"Bleeding gums are not that big of a deal."


MYTH: Red, swollen and bleeding gums are an important sign of periodontal disease. If you notice bleeding while brushing or flossing, or when eating certain foods, you should schedule a visit with your dental professional to be evaluated for periodontal disease.

Dr. Richard E. Offutt


Dr. Offutt attended the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia where he received specialty degrees in periodontics and endodontics. Dr. Offutt was a professor at the University of Pennsylvania upon the completion of his specialty training.
Dr. Offutt has practiced periodontics and implantology in Charlotte since 1982. he has devoted an extensive number of days to continuing education in the areas of dental implants and periodontology.

Tripp Cockerham, DDS, MSD


Dr. Cockerham graduated Cum Laude from Wake Forest University with a BS in Biology and a Masters of Arts in Business Management.  Dr. Cockerham graduated with Honors from the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill School of Dentistry.  After Dental School, he completed a General Practice Residency at UNC Memorial Hospital.

Dr. Cockerham completed his Masters of Science in Dentistry and his specialty training in Periodontics at the University of Louisville.
