NEWS AND STORIES FOR THIS MONTH
New Leaderships for ENoLL
ENoLL elected its new leadership team at the annual General Assembly of the association held in Istanbul on August 25th. Dr. Tuija Hirvikoski, Director at Laurea University of Applied Sciences, was elected as the new ENoLL President and Chair of the Council. Artur Serra, Deputy Director, i2cat Foundation in Barcelona, was appointed as Vice President of ENoLL. Prof. Dr. Pieter Ballon, Director of iMinds Living Labs & Professor at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel was re-elected as the International Secretary of the Association and Mr. Esa Ala-Uotila, Customer Relationship Director at TAMK, Suuntaamo, was elected Treasurer of the Association. The ENoLL Council was consolidated to 18 representatives, with the re-election of some of its existing members and the election of two new members: Prof. Joelle Mastelic, Professor & Researcher at the University of Applied Science Western Switzerland (Energy Living Lab) and Dr. Brigitte Trousse, President of French Living Labs.
OpenLivingLab Days
170 international participants, 22 workshops, 17 academic papers, 25 new ENoLL members, inspiring keynotes, engaging panels, passionate pitches and 4 great social events later we returned tired but inspired from 4 days in Istanbul for OpenLivingLab Days 2015. A huge thanks to our hosts Basaksehir Living Lab and Başakşehir Municipality for their warm hospitality and for showcasing the city so incredibly. We're thrilled to announce that in 2016 we will be heading to Montreal, Canada for the next edition of OpenLivingLab Days with the support of hosts Living Lab Communautique and Concordia University. The event will take place in August 2016 & you can discover more here.
OpenLivingLab Days Research Day & Conference Proceedings
The Research Day traditionally marks the opening of OpenLivingLab Days where, following a call for papers, researchers from around the world gather to share their research on Living Lab cases, methods and tools. In Istanbul 17 academic papers were discussed in three dynamic sessions on topics as varied as Living Lab panel management, Living Labs in the tourism industry & how wearables can support Living Lab projects. This year’s Veli-Pekka Niitamo Prize for best paper was awarded to Dimitri Schuurman from iMinds (Belgium) for his paper on a systematic literature review of Living Labs. Welcome to new Effective Members: Krakow Technology Park & Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality
We are excited to welcome two new Effective Member to ENoLL following the August 2015 General Assembly held during OpenLivingLab Days 2015; Krakow Technology Park from Poland and Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality - Smart City Istanbul from Turkey. Krakow has been an long standing associated member of ENoLL and we are thrilled they have transition to opening a permanent Living Lab project and after spending an incredible week in Istanbul for OpenLivingLab Days 2015 we look forward to collaborating more closely with the the Smart City Istanbul project in the future.
Welcome to the new 9th Wave members of ENoLL
On the 26th of August 2015, ENoLL announced the results of the 9th Wave and officially welcomed its new members. During the 9th wave 37 applications were submitted from Living Labs in 22 different countries. The peer-led evaluation process, headed by Jesse Marsh and supported by 17 international experts in 9 countries, resulted in 25 new accepted Living Labs joining the worldwide Open Living Labs community from Europe, Canada, India, the USA, Tunisia & Mauritius. HIGHLIGHTS FROM MEMBERS
New Cite du Design Book "When design... drives innovation"
This spring ENoLL took part and organized a workshop in collaboration with Living Lab Cite du design during the International Design Biennial Saint-Etienne. As an output of the event, Cite du design is pleased to announce the publication of their new book: When design... drives innovation. The book presents testimonies of actors, designers, developers and managers sharing their experiences on the local territory or abroad. CreatiFI Open Call 1: energising the creative industries
CreatiFI, a European initiative involving Living Labs iMinds, Forum Virium Helsinki, Barcelona Laboratory & the ENoLL office, is one of the 16 Future Internet Accelerator within the FIWARE programme targeting creative industries It aims to stimulate the start of new businesses and launch of innovative products/services. Kick-started in summer 2015, the initiative brought in 59 SMEs during Open Call 1 providing them with financial support and coaching. Reflections from LabMeeting 2015, Madrid
The LabMeeting 2015, a 3-day workshop organised by Karin Ohlenschläger and hosted by MediaLab Prado took place in Madrid last week. It aimed to explore the origins and the development of the Lab movement and brought together over 70 activists, researchers and representatives from academia, the arts, public institutions and lab managers representing media/ hack/ fab/ city/ maker and Living Labs, including some networks. From the Living Lab community Barcelona Laboratori & Citilab Cornellá were actively present. ENoLL participated and coordinated one of the parallel workshops related to the value of lab networks and the different cooperation models. Read our reflections from the event here.
Laurea GameJam 2015 – Adopting Healthier Lifestyles
Last week, JamToday 2015 Game Jam ‘and they lived healthier ever after’ was hosted by Laura Applied Sciences University welcoming enthusiastic youngsters representing the health, gaming & education sectors. The assignment was to provide a gamified solution to a specific health related problem, through using Applied Games. The ideas and prototypes prepared and presented after such a short time frame (only 48 hours) amazed the jury and all the stakeholders who took part on the event. Open Call for FIWARE Lab nodes
The FI-Core project, funding part of the activities of the FIWARE PPP initiative, has reserved a portion of the project budget to fund specific tasks to be carried out by new beneficiaries. This open call aims to expand the FIWARE Lab federation with new nodes to increase the capacity of current facilities, provide an improved service to the users from the Acceleration Programme and beyond in addition to fostering the creation of production grade commercial FIWARE instances with credible business plans. Take part in the Smart City App Hack SCAH–FIWARE online competition
Smart City App Hack (SCAH) and FIWARE have jointly launched an online competition that will distribute up to 150,000 € in prizes for developers already using FIWARE or those who desire to start using it. Read more here.
Open and Agile Smart Cities at ICT2015
Open and Agile Smart Cities (OASC) organises a dedicated networking session at ICT2015 in Lisbon on the 22nd of October. The session combines informative talks and pitches from cities and entrepreneurs, with an active contribution from participants who will be able to post their input, contact details, suggestions and information on a networking wall. This session will support the engagement of new cities/city stakeholders joining forces with OASC & improve peer to peer knowledge among OASC cities and related stakeholders.

PELARS & Learning Analytics at ICT2015
As a part of ICT 2015 the PELARS project comes together with sister Learning Analytics projects LACE & Watchme to host the “Scaling up learning analytics: Innovating European Education” session on the 21st of October.
Using Big Data for education is far more challenging than using Big Data for pinpoint marketing and targeted advertising. European values of cultural diversity and social and data protection standards are at stake. If a European policy on scaling up learning analytics is not put in place we will not reap the full potential of this new technology. This session introduces these 3 projects different & complementary approaches to the future of Learning Analytics and includes interactive polling & networking. Discover more here.

RehabMaLL Open House, 3 November in Montreal
CRIR Rehabilitation Living Lab in the mall (RehabMaLL) will organse a Scientific Day and Open House on November 3rd 2015 at the Alexis Nihon mall in Montreal. Over the past four years, using a living lab approach of co-creation, they have strived to change the indoor physical and social environments to become more inclusive to the young and old, especially to those with disabilities. This day will focus on their impact, practices and policies in the mall where stakeholders can discover more & celebrate what has been achieved since its creation in 2011. Read more here.
iMinds SuperMinds, 20 October in Brussels
On October 20, iMinds once again invites 1000+ researchers to its annual SuperMinds Conference. The SuperMinds conference puts eight researchers on the spotlight to share their vision on digital innovation or their latest research. The 2015 edition will feature 8 SuperMinds talks ranging from topics on gamification to IoT. Discover more here.

Report: FIspace technical workshop in Bremen
September the 2nd, FIspace organised a face-to-face workshop dedicated to Phase 3 accelerators and developers in Bremen, Germany. The aim of the workshop was to show the latest updates and available functionalities of the platform through a live, step-by-step demonstration of an end-to-end example. A simple scenario allowed to explain the platform’s functioning from various point of views: the developer’s, the end user’s and the business architect’s. The following topics were presented and discussed during the day:
  • FIspace in practice - Weather scenario presented from different aspects/different users point of view
  • Efficient API programming
  • Widgets and services in the store; Working with the EPM and BCM; Upcoming feature demonstration
  • Programming using the FIspace SDK
  • Connecting to FIspace securely
