Kentville Indoor Market
The Kentville Farmers Market has announced it will move indoors at the Kentville Lions Hall for this winter's Market Season.

The move is exciting for both the Market and the Lions Club who look forward to working together to keep the vibrancy of the Market alive over the winter months in a new larger space with better parking, and more accessibility.
The first indoor market date at the Lions Club space on River Street is October 14th.
Go Fund Me: Support the Kentville Market
The Kentville Farmers Market has been operating in Kentville for 7 years, providing local farmers and producers a place to do commerce, and supporting the Kentville community by bringing traffic and life to the downtown.

The Market is moving to a new indoor space for the winter months which requires unbudgeted work to make it a good space for the market.  Without help, vendor fees may need to increase to make ends meet, and that's not good for vendors or the Market in general!  Happy vendors make for a bigger and better market so help us out with a donation so we can stay thriving and keep our vendors prosperous!

The Kentville Farmers Market Society is a registered not-for-profit society made up of volunteers.  The Market generates operating funds mainly through grants and sponsorships.  All help is sincerely appreciated!

Millionaire's Shortbreads
Servings: 20-25 squares Cook Time: 30 Minutes
Total Time: 2 Hours

Ingredients
For the Crust
• 1 cup all-purpose flour, spooned into measuring cup and leveled-off
• 1/4 cup dark brown sugar
• 2 teaspoons cornstarch
• 1/4 teaspoon salt
• 1 stick (1/2 cup) cold unsalted butter, cut into 1/2-inch cubes
• 1 tablespoon ice water
• 1 large egg yolk

For the Caramel Layer
• 1 (14-oz) can sweetened condensed milk
• 1/2 cup dark brown sugar
• 6 tablespoons unsalted butter
• 2 tablespoons golden syrup (such as Lyle's Golden Syrup) or dark corn syrup
• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
• Generous pinch salt

For the Chocolate Layer
• 6 ounces semi-sweet chocolate, broken into small pieces, best quality
• 3 tablespoons heavy cream

Instructions
For the Crust
1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Line a 9-inch square pan with aluminum foil, pushing the foil neatly into the corners and up the
sides of the pan, using two pieces if necessary to ensure that the foil overlaps all edges (the overhang will help removal from the
pan). Spray the foiled pan with nonstick cooking spray or grease with butter.
2. In the bowl of a food processor fitted with a metal blade, combine the flour, brown sugar, cornstarch and salt; process until well
combined and no lumps of brown sugar remain. Add the butter and pulse until a coarse meal forms. Add the ice water and egg yolk and blend until moist clumps form. Dump the dough into the prepared pan and press with your fingers into an even layer (dust your fingers with flour if the dough is too sticky). Pierce the dough all over with a fork and bake until golden, about 20
minutes. Set aside to cool.

For Caramel Layer
1. Whisk the sweetened condensed milk, brown sugar, butter, golden syrup, vanilla and salt together in a medium saucepan over
medium heat until the sugar dissolves, the butter melts and the mixture comes to a boil. Attach a candy thermometer to the side
of the pan and boil gently, whisking constantly, until the caramel is thick and the temperature registers 225 degrees F, about 6 minutes. Pour the caramel over the warm crust; cool for about 15 minutes, or until caramel is set.

For Chocolate Layer
Place the chocolate and cream in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave in 20 second intervals, stirring in between, until the chocolate is about 75% melted. Stir, allowing the residual heat in the bowl to melt the remaining chocolate, until smooth (if necessary, place the
chocolate back in the microwave for a few more; just be sure not to overheat or the mixture will curdle). Spread the chocolate over the caramel layer. Refrigerate the bars until the chocolate is set, at least 1 hour. Using the foil overhang, lift the bars out of the pan
and transfer to a cutting board.

Cut into small squares and store in the refrigerator until ready to serve.

Donations Needed for the Learning Centre!
Child poverty is Nova Scotia is a fact. Anyone who has working in our school system is aware of this on a daily basis. The Nova Scotia Child Poverty report of 2014 suggests that 25% of children in Nova Scotia live below the poverty line. In the report the rate of child poverty in Kentville is measured at 24.4%. The statistics are frightening!

At KCA we see so many students in need and through the Learning Centre, we try to fill a lot of these needs. This could be feeding or clothing students, helping them with the family laundry, or letting them have a shower.

Mature Subject Matter

A mother from New Jersey roams the hills of Lockerbie Scotland, looking for her son's remains that were lost in the crash of Pan Am 103. She meets the women of Lockerbie, who are fighting the U.S. government to obtain the clothing of the victims found in the plane's wreckage. The women, determined to convert an act of hatred into an act of love, want to wash the clothes of the dead and return them to the victim's families. The Women of Lockerbie is loosely inspired by a true story, although the characters and situations in the play are purely fictional. Written in the structure of a Greek tragedy, it is a poetic drama about the triumph of love over hate. Winner of the silver medal in the Onassis International Playwriting Competition and the Kennedy Center Fund for New American Plays award.

Citizen Question
Question: My neighbours live on a corner of a fairly busy intersection. Their bush on the corner is so large that it is impossible to see if any traffic is coming.
This is the same for snowbanks.
Whose responsibility is that to have bushes trimmed? or snow removed? The Town's? The property owner's?

Answer: It's a property owner's individual responsibility to make sure that growth on their property near roadways or intersections doesn't impede the ability of motorists and pedestrians to safely travel. When over growth is determined to be a hindrance to visibility, (there are standards to follow) the Town will ask property owners to rectify the issue. Failure to rectify the issue in a timely manner can sometimes result in the Town clearing the growth at the owner's expense.

Pumpkin People at KCA
Mayor Dave along with Pumpkin People book authors and illustrators Ron and Sandra Lightburn went to KCA on Wednesday to read The Pumpkin People book. Sixty grade three students at KCA were a captive audience and were over the moon to receive their very own copy to take home. Spike made an appearance, and predictably, stole the show.

This is one of our very favourite annual events, and we’re thankful the KCA school community welcomes us each year with open arms. We’re already looking forward to next year!
