This fall we'll have been in business for Thirty-Five years! It's hard to imagine — it seems like only yesterday we were a fresh-faced independent young bookstore of but twenty, with more energy and impetuousness than maturity and sense. Now, a little older and a little wiser we can look back over the accumulating years and reflect on all the bookmarks, bargains, paper cuts, and chapters.  And so it is with deep gratitude that we'd like to acknowledge and thank all our customers, authors, and staff for making the first thirty-five years so excellent.

In this 35 Year Anniversary Newsletter:

Seach Over 6,000 Nautical Books, Charts, DVDs, & Software
Facepalm
Professional Mariners:  Most of the books listed here are primarily of interest to recreational boaters. A large section of our website and a separate newsletter are devoted to the shipping industry. We're also working on a Transport Canada Exam Guide.

Five years ago, for our Thirtieth anniversary, we posted this accurate and enthralling oral history of The Nautical Mind:

Cira 1984?It’s 1980 and, for sailors in Toronto, the 4-year-old CN tower is a relatively new andextremely visible landmark. But there’s no SkyDome (er, Rogers Centre) in sight, let alone an Air Canada Centre gathering or expelling hordes of fans—only industrial buildings and railway yards. The America’s Cup is being raced in 12-metres, and no one has defeated the New York Yacht Club for the Auld Mug in more than 130 years.Canada’s hopes for a good showing in Olympic yachting, following our first-ever medal win in 1972 have just been dashed by the international boycott of the USSR Games. Canada’s stellar showing by McLaughlin & Bastet, Neilson & Fogh, and Calder & Kerr (three medals in Flying Dutchman, Finn, and Soling) are still four years away.

Rextravaganza is a perfectly cromulent word

Help fellow seafarers find their way by adding guiding stars and reviews to your favourite books on nauticalmind.com â€” and get entered in a raffle with a chance to win a $25 gift certificate.

For every review you contribute, we’ll add your name to the raffle hat. You can even review charts or navigation tools if you want.  Negative reviews are okay too, but extremely short/uninformative reviews might get disqualified.

The raffle will be held on Friday, October 30th.

"It is hard to believe that Toronto has such a great bookstore. They seem to have every nautically themed book that one could desire, including ones that are difficult to find even online (that said, they have an online storefront that I hope ensures that they will be able to stay in business for years to come). A relatively small storefront, but absolutely loaded with books." - J.H. on Google

BE YOUR OWN BOAT!Beyond the Break
by Wouter Verbraak

On November 29, 2014, Team Vestas Wind ran aground on the Cargardos Carajos Shoal in the Indian Ocean during the 2014 Volvo Ocean Race. This resulted in the near total loss of the boat. A week after the disaster, in an online post, navigator Verbraak admitted making errors. This book details the disaster but also explores wider racing issues and factors. Verbraak's book is creatively designed and packed with colour photos from the race.

CURRY FORCE 10: TOTAL DEVASTATIONBoatowner's Mechanical and Electrical Manual
by Nigel Calder

4th ed. This is the recently modernized and updated version of one of the Nautical Mind’s bestselling titles. Calder's indispensable and thorough manual gives you detailed instructions for maintaining, repairing, and improving every essential system on your boat. A must for every boater’s shelf.

You think you can just cruise through lifeStress-free Sailing: Short-handed Sailing Techniques
by Duncan Wells
In this unique book, Wells provides clever, original techniques and solutions for handling the range of essential operations on a boat when crew is scarce. Organized by activity, the book features step-by-step sequential photos and diagrams showing exactly how to approach each situation and safely complete the task. There are also pictures and examples of what not to do. Each section also includes QR codes, which can be scanned using a Mobile Phone or Tablet, to view videos and other information on the author’s website.

You can do it.Casting Off
by Emma Bamford

A journalist for the Independent, Bamford was swept along in the London rat race. With budget cuts looming and bullies making life difficult, the thrill of breaking a news story is no longer enough to offset trials at work. So at 31, with no potential husband in sight, she decides to throw off the known and reclaim freedom—by running away to sea and joining a complete stranger (and his cat) on a yacht in Borneo.

BE YOUR OWN BOAT!Voyaging with Kids
by Behan Gifford, Sara Dawn Johnson & Michael Robertson

Published by Lin and Larry Pardey, this new book talks about all aspects of long-distance sailing or cruising with families. Interviews with families who cruised provide interesting insights into re-adjusting to life ashore and how the children look back on their experiences.

Soaked shirt dryingSea Fever
by Sam Jefferson

The need to go down to the sea, or to mess about in boats, is one that has afflicted, inspired and driven the writing of many great authors. A journalist and maritime historian, Jefferson shares some of the true stories that have inspired great scenes in maritime literature, including episodes crafted by Hemingway, R.L. Stevenson, Melville, and Conrad.

Found it.Wreck of the Whale Ship Essex
by Owen Chase
In 1820, the whaling ship Essex was attacked and sunk by a sperm whale in the Southern Pacific Ocean. First mate Owen Chase wrote about the sinking and the months of starvation, danger and cannibalism that followed. Herman Melville drew on this event and book when penning his Moby-Dick. This edition is richly illustrated with photos, paintings, images of relevant artifacts and maps. It is simply gorgeous and is deserving of a place in your library.

From the Blog

We first met Paul Howard, Fiona McCall, and their two children Penny and Peter, when they sailed into Toronto Harbour in 1988, after a five-year round-the-world voyage in their 29-foot junk-rigged craft Lorcha.

Crowds were on hand to greet them. Luckily for us, their publisher was on the ball, and we had copies on hand of their book All in the Same Boat. We promptly sold our 100 copies, as Paul and Fiona busied themselves greeting people and signing copies of their book. It was a memorable occasion.

Since then, we have followed the adventures of this extraordinary sailing couple, who are still out there doing it.
