Life Lessons from the Laundry Pile

The year I got married must have been the "year of the bathroom towel." After our showers and wedding gifts had been opened, we had enough bathroom towels to fully stock our linen closets - and STILL fill two additional totes. (Yes, 2 totes!) Rather than hassling with returns, we opted to store them in the totes sure that they would come in handy some day in the future. This past spring (12 years later), I was folding a load of laundry and noticed how thin, worn, and faded our towels had become. Then, a fleeting memory crossed my mind which made me start laughing. Still available and waiting for me were brand-new, fluffy, unused, bright and soft ones. For weeks, I had been coping with thin, dilapidated towels when I had access to so much more. All I needed to do was to make the effort to retrieve them from the garage.

Then, it hit me! This scenario can often be repeated in my life. So many times I "do life" relying on my own limited strength and abilities. The reality is that because of my faith in Jesus, I have been gifted with so much more! Whether I am (trying) to be patient during homework, gently disciplining a wrong-doer, faithfully serving my family by creating three meals a day, doing home upkeep, or working my business - my individual efforts are meager, thin, and lacking! But, I'm thankful to have a God that has abundant, brand-new resources. His love, His patience, His joy, His strength, and His peace are always available. All I need to do is take the time to seek and ask for them through the the study of the Word and prayer.

What about you? What areas of your life are thin and worn? What step will you take today to seek God's abundant resources?

Isaiah 40:29 - 31 (NIV)
He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.
Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall;
but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary,
they will walk and not be faint.
