Understanding Our Mind
with Ann McFadden
Ann McFadden, a Teaching Assistant for Khenpo Sherab Sangpo, will offer teachings on Thich Nhat Hanh’s book, “Understanding our Mind†that is based on fifty verses on the nature of consciousness taken from the great fifth century Buddhist master Vasubandhu. The commentary focuses on the direct experience of recognizing and embracing the nature of our feelings and perceptions. As we learned in the class series on “37 Practices of The Bodhisattvas,†some of the most important practices we do are completed post-meditation time while actively working on changing the habit energies that lead to suffering. Here, we learn how changing those habit energies have an affect on our storehouse consciousness, allowing transformation to happen at base (or ground of all). This class will provide an overview of the working of the eight consciousnesses and how they relate to the three ways our consciousness may perceive reality: as imaginary constructions, as interdependently arisen, and finally as ultimate reality. The goal of the class is to inspire students to further study and reading of these verses. Quote from verse 46:
We recognize internal knots and latent tendencies
so that we can transform them.
When our habit energies dissipate
Transformation at the base is there.

Nagarjuna Class Series
with Steve Tibbetts
Nagarjuna’s Root Verses on the Middle Way
Steve Tibbetts, a Teaching Assistant for Khenpo Sherab Sangpo, will guide group meditation practice on Sunday, October 18, November 1 and 15, and December 6 and 20, 2015, from 10:00 – 11:30 am.
We will look at the Middle Way view as put forth by Nagarjuna and consider why Vajrayana teachers believe an understanding of this view is essential for practice in the Dzogchen and Mahamudra lineages. We’ll consider a few key passages from his Mulamadhyamakakarika (The Root Verses on the Wisdom of the Middle Way), and try to come to a practical understanding of how this view can clarify our own practice.
That which arises interdependently
Does not cease and does not arise.
It is not nothing and not eternal.
It does not come and does not go.
It is not different and not the same.
To the one who teaches peace,
The pacification of all projections,
To the most sublime of all who speak:
To the perfect Buddha, I pay homage!
