September is National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. Street lamps and signs around the campus are lit in teal and the Nursing Department is hosting a course to provide information about the disease.

The American Cancer Society estimates that about 21,000 women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer this year, and although rare, it is the deadliest of all female reproductive cancers. Unlike other cancers which have screenings and can be detected early, only about 20% of ovarian cancer cases are diagnosed before it is advanced.

The good news is that if ovarian cancer is diagnosed and treated early, 94% of women have a good outlook for long-term survival. Ovarian cancer is called the “disease that whispers” because symptoms are vague and can mimic other conditions or diseases.  Most women report that they noticed symptoms as these tend to occur frequently, every day or every other day and at least 12 times a month.

Come learn more about ovarian cancer on Monday, September 28th, 2015 from 2-3 pm in the Health Sciences Building, Decatur Campus, Room 105.  Regina Parker, Executive Director of Lilies of the Valley, and Susan Leighton, National Program Director, OCNA Survivors Teaching Students Program, will present “Ovarian Cancer:  What Every Woman Needs to Know”.

FAMILY HISTORY MONTH GENEALOGY WORKSHOP

Are you interested in learning how to get started in genealogy research? You're in luck during the 2015 October Family History Month!

The Morgan County Genealogical Society (MCGS) will hold a beginner-intermediate research skills workshop on two consecutive Saturdays in October.  The workshop will be held October 10 and 17, from 9am - 2pm at the Morgan County Archives (624 Bank Street, Decatur).  This is a free event and open to the public. Bring a sack lunch - snacks and drinks will be provided.  Members of MCGS will be on hand to share their expertise and experience.

During the first session, October 10th, we'll be learning about typical genealogy forms, where to find information about your family, and a little about proper documentation of your work.  You'll also get a 'homework' assignment to try out your new knowledge.

The October 17th session will review the assignment, and explore online research opportunities at such sites as Ancestry, Find-a-Grave, FamilySearch, and more.  We’ll also give you some ideas for sharing your newfound information with family and friends.

You do not have to be from or have family from Morgan County (or even north Alabama).  Nor do you need to attend both Saturday sessions.  The information covered during the workshops is universal and designed to help anyone begin their family history research journey or to improve their basic skills.

While the event is free, we'd like to get an idea of how many people are interested in attending, in order to plan for copies, snacks, etc. You may email MCGS President, Terri Hildreth, to register, or to receive additional information at tleeh1@aol.com. Please include your name, contact information, and whether you consider yourself a beginner or an intermediate researcher.

KUDOS TO OUR CLINICAL LABORATORY TECHNICIAN PROGRAM!!!

The Clinical Laboratory Technician program had their on-site accreditation visit a few weeks ago, which is part of the national accreditation process for Calhoun with the National Accreditation Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS).

After many months of review and documentation by the CLT program staff, Calhoun received an excellent exit interview report. This was an open review which included the CLT staff, Dr. Klauber, Dr. Calatrello and the Health Sciences department.

Although this is just the preliminary and it will be a few weeks before the written report is executed, the CLT program staff wanted to share this wonderful news with their Calhoun family.

In the spring the CLT program staff expects to receive a full 10-year accreditation.

Please join in wishing the CLT program team and all who played a part in obtaining an excellent exit interview report a job well done!

Message from AFLAC reps:

We wanted to touch base and make sure everyone was aware that Calhoun already has a group account established with AFLAC. Calhoun employees get the very best rates that AFLAC offers, and they will deduct them from your paycheck on a pre-tax basis.

We are available to meet with anyone individually that would like more information on our policies, has any questions they need answering, or would like to take out one of our policies.

If you missed getting a packet on the policies that we offer at Calhoun, have any questions at all, or would like a policy please email Kim here and we will get back with you promptly to set up a time to take care of your needs.  Remember that most policies had rates in the packets that you picked up at In-service, but Short Term Disability and Life must be quoted individually.

Thank you so much for your time.  We look forward to meeting your needs!
