Dance Your Inner Child

Exploring movement with children is so much fun! (Polka dot skirts not required!) Photo by Valerie Lockhart.
Hello <<First Name>>,

Last weekend at Open Streets we had a blast dancing in the park on Nicollet Ave. During the first demo class I noticed a little girl in the street watching us. She was very young, dark brown hair, standing in the middle of the street, her watchful dad standing a little bit behind her. Then she started to move. She followed our movements, swaying side to side, moving her way, but following us too. It was so great to watch her! She was uninhibited, totally focused on moving, having a great time!  After the event was over I went over to her dad and met her. She was a very sweet and talkative 2 year old. I suggested that she and her dad might like to sign up for one of my upcoming Nia with Adults and Kids classes.

We each have an inner child within us just like that 2 year old I met on Sunday. Somewhere along the way of growing up, and being told told to sit still, to be quiet, to wait until later to eat or drink,  we end up living in our heads instead of our bodies. And we tend to lose our grasp on that child-like sense of wonder in moving our bodies. Nia allows us to rediscover that joy, the joy of movement. Can you remember the last time you felt a brand new sensation in your body?  We practiced Principle 1 of the White Belt-- Joy of Movement - Sensing Life Force Energy, last weekend at the White Belt training. We moved to seek a new sensation and sometimes we felt one and more often we didn't. And that's totally fine. The idea is to become embodied, to listen and learn from your body and move it the way the body was meant to move.

This week in class we'll focus on awareness with our intention to improve our physical well-being. Awareness begins as a somatic (of the body) process. To be fully aware though, we need our body, mind, emotions and spirit all focusing on the same thing. We'll begin with awareness sensed through our skin and then through our other senses. There are always sensations to be aware of through our skin, it's the largest organ of our body.

This sweet video of a toddler experiencing summer rain for the first time has been going around the internet. I encourage you to notice sensations of all kinds this week, especially the sensations of pleasure and pain on your skin.

See you in class!

Want to learn more about Nia?

Several students have asked me about the music I play in class. Almost all of it comes from NiaSounds.  Here's a link to checking out the CDs of music that Nia sells. Each of the CDs has a preview option so you can hear the songs first. Enjoy!

For resources on learning the 52 Moves, you can click on this link.
Nia Black Belt Instructor Donna Starnes takes you through all 52 Moves in these eHow videos.

Another wonderful resource on the 52 Moves is the book, The Nia Technique, by Debbie and Carlos Rosas, founders of Nia.

Speaking of Nia!

I recently spoke to a group at Fairview Southdale Hospital about Nia and its philosophies. We also moved and danced together and experienced some of the 52 moves. If you have a group that would enjoy an hour presentation about Nia, I'd like to tailor a talk and movement experience just for your group. Contact me at bethgilesnia@gmail.com.
Ready to Feel Good in Your Body?
Come dive into the joy of movement! Nia is a unique combination of nine movement forms drawn from dance, martial arts and healing arts. We move our entire bodies in a healthful, sustainable way and become aware of sensations in our bodies. We dance and move in Nia to sense joy and pleasure, not pain. Nia is for all fitness abilities and all ages. Nia can be an intense aerobic workout or more easy and gentle depending the level of intensity you bring to the movement.

Dress in comfortable clothes, that you are willing to get sweaty in. We dance in bare feet, but shoes are optional. Bring a water bottle. Bring a yoga mat if you like that for the floor play part of class.

If you have any questions about Nia or the classes/events listed here, please send me an e-mail or give me a call, 612-802-9127.

Yours in the dance of life,
Beth
