I'm Elizabeth—wife to Mr. Tall, Dark and Handsome, mom to the four Thompson Crazies, writer of books and blog posts, grocery lists and lists of 13—and I look forward to sharing some of the wacky wonderfulness of family life together.

Bringing God into School Days

How in the world is it already pumpkin time?! Now that school has started, we're doing our best to bring God into busy school days at the Thompson Zoo—I mean home.

Today's newsletter includes:

  • a free printable download you can use to help kids pay attention and learn during worship services (I love having my kids sit through service with me—it's a lot of work, but it's such a great opportunity to learn and worship together as a family.)

  • excerpts from recent blog posts, including Back-to-School scriptures for kids, and scriptures to boost kids' confidence

  • a link to my first-ever podcast!

Enjoy! Wishing you lots of pumpkins and apple cider these next few weeks!

13 Back-to-School Scriptures for Kids:

Kids have so many questions and worries as school starts: Will I get the teacher I wanted? Will this year be really hard? Will my friends still be my friends? Here are 13 Back-to-School Scriptures to help our children get spiritually prepared for school. Read the full article.

13 Confidence-Building Scriptures for Kids and Teens:

Sometimes it feels like the whole world is on a mission to beat down our kids’ confidence. Maybe they are teased by a friend or a sibling; maybe they don’t get the encouragement they crave from a teacher or coach; maybe their own insecurities constantly whisper, “You’re not enough.” How can we arm our kids with the right kind of confidence? These 13 scriptures can help. Read the full article.

When Kids Know God Better than We Do:

"God paint trees, Mommy."

My two-year-old beams up at me, pointing a chubby finger at the thick trees shading our front lawn. Her word choice surprises a laugh out of me. “You know what? You’re right! God did paint those trees.” Read the full article.

What Moms Say Vs. What Kids Hear

I'm guest posting this month on Bonbon Break, a mom site I love. It's a humorous "communication guide" to help translate what our kids hear when we speak:

Moms say: “The answer is no.”
Kids hear: “You should ask me again 18 times.”

Moms say: “Please stop making that noise.”
Kids hear: “That is my favorite noise ever. I’d like to hear it 500 more times.”

Moms say: “I’m going to take a shower now."
Kids hear: “This would be a fantastic time for you to crack open the bathroom door with your eyes squeezed shut and ask me life-or-death questions like. . .”

The Thirteenth Summer

Threats, love, and rock and roll . . . Crystal Waters never expected her 13th summer to go anything like this! Fancy hotels. Epic concerts. A decked-out tour bus. Old rock-and-roll guys who knew her when she wore diapers. The drummer’s son Luke, a.k.a. the cute surfer boy who makes Crystal’s heart skip beats. Dangerous secrets from her father's past. An obsessed stalker, making terrifying threats. Crystal’s thirteenth summer just got very complicated.
