September Recap

WashingCon 2015

September marked the very first tabletop gaming convention in Washington, DC. WashingCon was a huge success, with lots of special guests, tournaments, and prizes. We filled the venue all day with a huge variety of board games and guests of all ages. Thanks to our co-organizers, sponsors, and everyone who participated. An extra special thank you to all of our amazing volunteers; we couldn't have done it without them.

  Magic the Gathering Special Tournaments

Last month featured a wide variety of special Magic: The Gathering tournaments and events on Tuesday nights, including Legacy, Modern, Star Commander, and Team Sealed. We had a great turnout, and were excited to welcome many new players for the unique game formats. Starting the first week of October, we will be hosting a weekly sealed deck league for Battle for Zendikar. For sealed deck league, players build 40 card decks out of six booster packs, and over the course of five weeks can add additional packs to their deck. Winners will receive fun prizes such as playmats and promo cards. No signup necessary!

Magic: The Gathering Battle for Zendikar Pre-Release

At the end of September we celebrated the pre-release of the new Magic: the Gathering set, Battle for Zendikar. Thematically, Magic has returned to a fan favorite story line in the plane of Zendikar: a world of danger and monsters. We decorated the store with prize-filled hedrons, impressing even the head designer of Magic, Mark Rosewater. Check out how cool they look! Battle for Zendikar goes on sale October 2nd, with boosters, intro decks, and a new event deck.

Board Game Battle: Seven Wonders

October's Board Game Battle is for the popular board game Seven Wonders. This is a tournament, so some experience playing the game or knowledge of the rules is recommended. Entry fee is $5. Please bring cash.

You are the leader of one of the 7 great cities of the Ancient World. Gather resources, develop commercial routes, and affirm your military supremacy. Build your city and erect an architectural wonder which will transcend future times.

7 Wonders lasts three ages. In each age, players receive seven cards from a particular deck, choose one of those cards, then pass the remainder to an adjacent player. Players reveal their cards simultaneously, paying resources if needed or collecting resources or interacting with other players in various ways. (Players have individual boards with special powers on which to organize their cards, and the boards are double-sided). Each player then chooses another card from the deck they were passed, and the process repeats until players have six cards in play from that age. After three ages, the game ends.

There will be two games of randomly seated play. The four top-scoring players will go on to a final round. All participants will receive a promotional art palace card. Additionally, the top player will receive a 7 Wonders play-mat, and a new art wonder board pack. The second place player will receive a copy of the alternate art wonder pack. There will also be Labyrinth gift cards for the top four players. (The amount will be determined by how many participants there are.)

Android Netrunner Tournament

Android: Netrunner is the most popular "living" card game from Fantasy Flight Games. Living Card Games begin with a starter box, and then offer non-collectible expansion packs, instead of printing collectible booster packs.

Netrunner is an asymmetrical card game with a cyber-punk theme. Players play as either the Corp, a megacorporation bent on power and control over the masses, or the Runner, a hacker attempting to steal the Corp’s secret agendas.

This event is a tournament, recommended for those who already know how to play. There is a $5 entry fee, payable upon arrival. Cash is preferred! The entry fee goes towards prizes. Prizes include: a Criminal card Tri-maf Contact playmat, alternate art Femme Fatale, alternate art Swordsman, and HaasBioroid deck boxes.

First Moves Games Club for Little Kids

We are frequently asked to hold events for younger children. Due to popular demand, we offer a special monthly event from 9:30 to 10:30 am just for kids from 3-5 who love puzzles and games. We will play all sorts of great games designed to help dexterity and logic, math and language, and even social skills. Our “First Moves” classes are specifically designed to help children learn the basic skills needed to play games, including taking turns, winning and losing with grace, and following directions. We play many cooperative games too. This helps the children learn to work with others in a productive manner.

Each class will be $10 per child. You may drop your child off or stay with them as you prefer. This offers the perfect opportunity to get a free hour to explore Eastern Market. Children must be potty trained. You must reserve a spot for this class. Spaces are limited.
