Q. What do you do?
A. I'm a designer and a developer.
Q. Why do you do it?
A. I've always been drawn to the communication arts, even before I knew that's what it was called. Almost everything around us has been designed to enhance our communication with each other, whether it be a logo indicating your favorite coffee joint or signage on a highway. Not only do I love art and design, I love the fact that what I do is literally a part of every single person's day, every day.
Q. Where have you lived and which city was your favorite?
A. I've only had the opportunity to bounce around South Carolina (Greenville and Charleston) and Georgia (Savannah and Atlanta), and I'd have to say Atlanta is at the top of the list. Savannah has a fantastic art scene, but there's this diversity and opportunity in Atlanta that's really exciting.
Q. What do you wish everyone knew about your industry?
A. The amount of work that goes into what I do. Having the opportunity to do what I love every day is obviously a blessing, but many people don't understand that designers aren't just making pretty pictures all day. Between doing market research, countless drafts and sketches, user testing and actually creating a unique product, the hours add up. We love what we do, but you wouldn't go to a lawyer's office and tell them, "But it'll only take you a second. This is fun for you, right?"
Q. What do you wish you knew 15 years ago?
A. That failure really is a good thing. People say it, but no one listens until they finally look back and realize it for themselves.
Q. What music are you listening to now?
A. "Save Tonight" by Eagle-Eye Cherry.
Q. What are you reading?
A. "One More Thing (Stories and Other Stories)" by B.J. Novak.
Q. What’s your favorite thing about Atlanta?
A. There's always something to do, no matter what your interests are. Anyone that lives in Atlanta and says there's nothing to do isn't looking, like at all. If there isn't a festival or parade happening there's a hundred other gatherings and events going on.
Q. What’s the best advice you ever got?
A. "Just keep swimming." You can laugh, but Dori said a lot in those three words. I frequently tell myself to "take 5." Taking five minutes to breath and chill out when you're overwhelmed does wonders.
Q. In the Hollywood adaptation of your story, who plays you?
A. Dominic Monaghan.
